Well nobody went for the bike as a £300 non-runner on Gumtree, got a few silly offers but just knocked them back. At the moment I'm relaxing on Achill Island (west coast of Ireland) visiting family, but this Saturday I'll be home and determined to roll up my sleeves and sort out the TGB starting problem once and for all. The carb has been cleaned (twice!), the fuel lines replaced and the petcock checked. I'm getting a spark and it fires up fine with a squirt of starter fluid in the air intake. Everyone seems to be suggesting compression as a problem, so I've taken time off from the Guinness to order up a set of engine gaskets and some gasket sealant which should be waiting for me when I get home. Just need to get some 2-stroke oil for lubricating, and I'll be ready to start dismantling. Was planning to order up a new piston, but I'm going to check out the one I have first and see what condition it is in, no point in spending money needlessly. Watched a load of videos on Youtube and been sent some helpful pictures so I think I'm good to go. If the piston looks OK and it's rings are in place then hopefully the new gaskets will make all the difference. Is there anything else I should check/replace while I have all the plastic panels stripped off? As I don't have a garage it's not something I want to be doing too often, especially with winter coming up fast. Thanks as always guys.

While you're in there, might as well look at the condition of the cylinder walls, make sure the plug threads are good, and see if the head is flat. You can use a metal ruler held against the head and either look for light coming through or see if you can fit a feeler gauge between them.
