Hi all,
I've recently picked up a 2006 TGB 202 Classic with 2600 miles on the clock.
Took it on it's first spin up to work yesterday (approx 2 miles). Had a couple of issues with it stalling at traffic lights but it fired up again OK so got there and back safe and sound. It's a nippy wee machine, much faster off the line than the 4-strokes I'm more used too.
Back out this morning and thought I'd give it a bit longer to warm up. The bike started and idled fine for about 20 seconds then it died off. Tried to start it again and although the engine would start, as soon as I moved the throttle it died. in the end I gave up and walked to work.
Years ago I briefly had a new Piaggio B125 which was a dog of a bike and would do exactly the same thing. Someone suggested adding Silkolene Pro Fst to the fuel as it could be carb icing (it's chilly here in Scotland) This actuallyworked (although all the electrics failed the first time it got rained on so I got a refund anyway!!)
Any thoughts on what this might be (dodgy spark plug, blocked fuel filter ?) I can do basic repairs but the idea of taking out the carb etc would probably mean I'd have to get it to a garage.
Any thoughts would be very welcome - Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your mainjet is clogged in the carb, stock carb on these scooters have a really small mainjet and are knowned to get clogged just by looking at them!!lol

Thanks for that, will check out YouTube and see if there are any "how to clean your main jet" videos. How easy a job is it for a relative mechanical novice ??

Simon. I would try setting the idle mixture and speed and then clean the carb if that doesn't get you anywhere. This is a Minarelli carb, but the idea should be pretty much the same for yours. There are 4 parts to the series to check out that may be of use, but the one linked is idle adjustments. If you clean the carb, the vids should help you see the basic components. More or less you take the carb apart and spray out all passages with carb cleaner. Let it sit a few then spray it all out with compressed air. You can hold the jets up to light and look through the orifice to see if they're clogged or dirty. Don't try to use anything hard to clean out a jet because if you inadvertently make it larger it will throw the tune off. www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1vRMERs4RQ

OK, got back from work (walking...) and took the seat off for a look... Started the bike up and it ran OK although the idle started to dip after about 10 seconds and it probably would have died if I hadn't give the throttle a twist. Unlike this morning it didn't die on me. Does the idle always start quite strongly ?? Is this to do with the auto choke working ? Once I've worked out where the idle screw is should I let the engine get past this initial burst before adjusting ? Noticed the fuel filter is pretty grotty so will order up a replacement on eBay, one less thing to worry about.

I think it is likely the automatic enricher working the first 20 seconds or so. Warm the engine up for a few minutes before adjusting the mix screw.
I would inspect all hoses as well. Looks like it's been a bit since anything's been touched. If there's any doubt if a hose is good, replace it.

Great, thanks again for the advice.
Fuel lines seem to come in 6mm or 8mm, does it make much difference ? I've ordered an 8mm fuel filter as it seems to match the one already in the bike and is listed for my make and model, but there were also 6mm versions available. What a pity things aren't standardised !!
I've ordered up a bottle of Silkolene Pro FST. Used this on previous scooters I've owned including a Honda Dylan which covered 15K miles with me on it and never missed a beat. It is designed to clean and protect the carb as well as eliminating cold start problems.
It's quite interesting this, half of me would like just to be out on the bike with no problems, and half of me is quite enjoying learning more about how they work and can be repaired.

You can probably get either 6 or 8mm to fit, but I'd guess 6mm would be the closest to most connections. I usually use 3/16" (0.188") and 1'4" (0.250") for scooter fuel hose. 6mm = 0.236" and 8mm = 0.315".

That's fine, if the 8mm is too big I'll get a 6mm, they're only a couple of pounds anyway. I'm thinking the petrol in the tank might have been there for a while so perhaps I should drain it out and put fresh in (mixed with the Silkolene). Do I have to remove the whole furl tank or can I just unclip the hose from the fuel filter and let it drain out that way ?

Clamp the hose off somewhere to stop fuel and then remove the hose from the filter or carb. Then run the hose into a container that's fuel safe and unclamp the hose so fuel will drain.

Thanks, I'll do that this weekend and fit the new fuel filter at the same time. Took the bike in to work this morning. It started fine and I just set off almost straight away, rather than letting it idle a while. The bike ran fine, just kept a touch on the throttle whenever I had to stop at lights. Might just need the idle screw tweaked a bit after all...fingers crossed.

Just wanted to check I'm looking at the right thing. I presume the idle screw is the silver one with the spring...thanks
