I checked the float. Honestly not even sure where it needs to be set at but it looks like it may be set too high allowing more fuel in. The first pic shows the float height. The second pic shows me pushing the float down. Doesn't travel much at all. Looks like the carb has an 85 main jet. Anyone know where the float should be set? I figured midway, but can't really tell by the line on the float itself.

Seems like it may be a carb tuning issue... What main jet is in the carb that you bought? It may not be jetted properly for "plug n play". Is the carb the same size as stock? An air leak will affect performance tremendously as every little thing affects the air/fuel ratio... Even though it may Rev on the stand, the carb may still need to be tuned properly... A little trick I use is to use that snorkel in the airbox as a tool to help you identify if you're too lean or too rich. Taking the snorkel out will allow more air therefore leaning the mixture. Putting the snorkel in and maybe even restricting it some with a loosely wadded paper towel would richen the mixture... Hopefully you can feel a difference in performance and know which way to go- upjet or downjet. With the right carb tune you'll probably get the power back!! Same carb size, but the new one is a KeiHin. One thing I started thinking last night.. I didn't check the float. When I'm on the scooter and give it throttle about 1/4 to 1/2, the bike has power and seems to accelerate fine up to a certain point, then I need to give it more throttle to go faster but anything above 1/4 to 1/2 or so just doesn't give the bike any more power. The throttle cable and linkage work fine. There's no back firing on decel and it doesn't bog down like it's going to die or anything. I did try putting the old carb back in to see how it would do, but it is so gunked up it would barely even accelerate at all so I put the new carb back in.. I did check TDC and that is good. I wanted to make sure it somehow didn't jump a tooth or something like that. Chain is tight and the tensioner is doing it's job nicely. Last night I pulled the variator, took it apart and cleaned it real good. I should have taken pics, but the rollers look okay and didn't seem to have any flat spots, but had some discoloring. I also pulled the bell housing off the clutch to inspect it and the clutch springs are tight and also the main spring requires significant force to open the pulley to where I thought I wouldn't be able to open it by squeezing with my hands. I'm just trying to get this scooter to run decently so my wife and I can ride our scooters together, but this thing is becoming more of a pain than I ever thought.

I guess I'm assuming a lot since I bought this bike used and it wasn't in the best of conditions. This is a really dumb question but I've got to ask.. If the original roller weights are still in the scooter, wouldn't the weight be sufficient since that is what came stock, and if anything any wear on them would just make them lighter, wouldn't it? What are the stock weight of the rollers?
What's funny is this bike has less than 600 miles on it according to what is shown on the instrumentation, but who knows.

I appreciate the video, but what would you suggest?
Seems like the clutch engages properly. I checked and this bike has rollers. May upgrade to sliders. I'm really just trying to get this thing back to factory so it runs right, then later this year maybe upgrade to a BBK, larger carb, etc..
At about 6:42 on the video, he talks about how he had removed the airbox restrictions and was running so lean that it was bogging down his bike at WOT. This is very much like what I am experiencing. I'm kinda wondering if I've got an air leak somewhere in the intake of the carb, or at the manifold...

One other note. I've noticed that on takeoff it seems good, but once rolling, anything over about a quarter turn of the throttle doesn't seem to give it anymore RPM's or power. Starting to make me think it is the clutch or the tranny. Engine sounds good, just no power. Even WOT after takeoff it just doesn't give it any more.
Where's 99GTVert when you need him! lol..
Dumb question, but is the timing adjustable at all?

valve adjustment may help a lot, especially if they are out of adjustment. that is something to check out while tuning up, before considering lighter weights. good thought. I just adjusted the valves to .004 for both and still same problem, except now I've got valve tapping noise coming from them. I've seen somewhere where they should be set to .002 for the intake, and .003 for the exhaust. Not really sure about that though.. Dumb question.. If it's not the carb (I've triple checked it and even adjusted the needle to go rich to lean), or the valves, and if I get this belt next week and still have the same issues, what else could it be? I did take the belt off and put it back on so I could inspect it. When I did, I noticed that it required a lot of force to open the variable pulley on the back to slip in the belt. The springs are strong. The belt definitely needs replaced, looks worn, but isn't frayed or anything like that. The rear transmission system seems to run smooth when turning by hand. Could the clutch need some kind of adjustment also? Could the clutch not be engaging? I'm going to have to research the slides, clutch, tranny, etc..

Both at .004 on top dead center there are vids in the tech section if you need a few guide's Thanks. I've already watched a few vids last week on it so shouldn't have any issues...

Same thing happened to me, I got the same scoot used for my wife and man it was slow I cleaned the carb with motorcycle carb jet cleaners changed plug coil cdi and all that sucker would pull was 23 mph on flat I did the proper valve adjustment and she does a solid 41.26 mph gps verified all stock and she loves the Speedo goes to about 6 o clock thats a chinameter for ya Are you serious!?!?! I've not adjusted the valves yet. I never would have thought that would be something to check. I also changed the plug and coil. I've not changed the CDI yet.. I'll let her cool down and try adjusting the valves. BTW.. What did you adjust your valves to?

greetings. among other things, perhaps it is 'upshifting' early and keeping the engine at a lower rpm. i dont think a belt alone would cause that. perhaps some lighter roller weights would help bring up the rpms? It's almost like when the scooter is under load, it just doesn't get up RPM's but idling on the center stand, I can rev it and it goes up to 8k-9k with no problem. I just put a new carb in last night, but today was the first time I've even tried to ride the scooter. Could the carb not be adjusted properly and cause this? I'm just not very familiar with scooters, but have quite a bit of experience on auto and motorcycle engines. This whole belt/variator/clutch/etc stuff is kicking my butt..

I just recently bought a used Chinese scooter. It's got the GY6 139QMB 55cc engine. At idle it sounds fantastic. I can rev it and sounds great up to max RPM. I've been working on this scooter for the past week or so since it needed some things done to it. I have another thread in the Builds section under Transformer Bumblebee.
Still working on some lighting issues, but today I thought I'll take it down the road just to see how it does. I didn't have the instrument panel connected so not sure what RPM's I got at, but at WOT I maybe got up to 20mph and was even slower going up a slight hill. RPM's didn't sound like it got over 4-5k.
It does still have the original belt on it and I definitely need to buy a new one which I am today, but would this be causing my issue? I figured I'd still hear the RPM's go up high but the scooter would be slow. It doesn't sound bogged or anything when riding.
There's absolutely no smoke and it sounds great... Just not getting the speed I expected..
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT FIXED IT
The vacuum operated fuel petcock was apparently faulty causing it to suck gas into the intake through the vacuum line. This was causing an overly rich condition that was bogging the scooter down like crazy.

Had some fun this evening troubleshooting the wiring harness. Decided to go ahead and order a new one. Got most everything working, but still have intermittent/random issues and am done messing with it. I figured a new wiring harness should make it quite easier to complete, but I'll have to wait for it to arrive before I can put it in..

Great first post. Looking forward to seeing the finished product. Me too! I've got a lot of work ahead of me. I was also in the middle of painting my wife's scooter blue. It was originally red metallic. We live in Kentucky and of course bleed blue and are huge Kentucky Wildcat basketball fans. I had my friend make up all kinds of different Kentucky Wildcat Vinyl decals so I can bling up her scooter. I just finished putting her's back together and went for a test ride to make sure everything is buttoned up properly. I'll probably be putting the decals on over the next few days... Here's a before and after pic (of course before I've applied any decals): I did get my new carb, throttle cable, and flywheel puller today for my scooter so those are definitely going in the scoot tonight. I should also get my new mirrors and a couple other things tomorrow...

Not to worried about the rims at this point. I may do that later this fall when it starts getting cold.

This is my first post and I figured I'd post my progress of a scooter I bought. Last year for my wife's birthday, I bought her a Yamaha Vino 50cc 4 cylinder. She's wanted one since she use to have a scooter when she was a teenager and she absolutely loves this one. I ended up getting the bug also after I rode around on her's a couple of times over the past few months. A scooter showed up on Craigslist and the guy wanted $300 for it. It had a few issues. Primarily he could not get the scooter to start by the normal methods so he did a bit of a hot-wire setup on the starter relay. The throttle cable was broke. He also could not get the lights or horn to work. I started talking to him about it and went down to check it out. He started it up and it sounded really good. I was a bit surprised at how well it sounded, but I told him that If I couldn't take it for a test ride, the most I'd give him was $100. Well he agreed and now I have a GY6 139qmb 50cc chinese scooter for $100. It's exactly like the Tao Tao VIP Future Champion but it says 'Velocity' on the sides. It has a few scuffs here and there, and the seat has a small hole in it, but it's the perfect base to make a good scooter. Even came with a 2 month old battery! The first thing I had to do was to figure out why it wouldn't start normally with the key and controls. That was actually easy. Apparently this scooter came with an alarm system so I did some research and found out how to remove it and jumper the connector. That's done and now it starts up normally and I've removed his infamous hot-wire setup. The Auto-Enricher is hosed so I decided to go ahead and buy a new carb. I figured I'd have to clean it anyways and buy a new auto-enricher, so with a new carb setup, I'd have it easier on me. It actually runs okay now, but seems a little rich. The lights was amazingly easy to fix. At first I thought that it was a stator issue, but all it ended up being was the stator connector was not connected properly. Stator puts out good voltage from 12vac up. I've also got a few other parts on order.. New ignition wire and coil (jacket was cracked), throttle cable (original was broken), turn signal housing (internals of one of the bulb connectors was bad), kickstart lever (was missing), Turn signal relay flasher (not working), New mirrors (the ones that came with the scoot don't even match and look gaudy), new headlights (originals were blown), and a new belt cover (original was cracked). Since I've got all the panels off the scooter I figured I'd make it my own by changing the color scheme. I'm eventually going to probably do a BBK and some other mods, but for now, I'm trying to get this scooter road worthy so my wife and I can go on some scooter dates.. I decided to go with Yellow and Black. I've always liked those 2 colors together, and after seeing a picture online of this same body type scooter in that color, I'm hooked. Since I'm doing yellow and black, I talked to one of my co-workers who has a vinyl cutting machine and had him make me some transformers decals. He made me some in yellow and black and they turned out awesome! Here's the vinyl decals he made. they are inside the transfer paper so they don't look too good. He did the name "transformers" in the original design, and the newer movies design. All in both black and yellow! Here's some pics of the scooter that the original owner sent me. Needs some work, but that's what I was looking for! Here's kinda what I'll be going for as far as color and looks, of course minus any stickers or decals shown.. I'll post some new pics this weekend as I get a few more things done!
