You are going to like that 5BM! I bet it really hauls the mail on that light Jog.

I am soooo looking forward to it. My wife told me to take it easy for the rest of the evening and relax but I just can't stop, so I went back to my little workbench and removed the 5BM engine stock top end and scraped away the base gasket that was sticking on the engine block. Now it is ready to put on the Polini BBK and do some additional cleaning.

There is no taking it easy when there is fun work to be done! I wonder what it's like riding a scoot with disc breaks? I don't use the front much but it sure would look cool! I have a few yamaha cases I need to check, maybe I have one of those fancy cases sitting out there! Nice rides man, aren't you in Japan?

nelsonThanks! Yeah, living in Japan for 9 years. Front disc is a life saver without it i would have had a couple ugly endings with other cars or pedestrians that suddenly jump out. I use the front break together with the rear just with different pressure. And the disc break looks cool. Once I get the Jog to run good as I want it to I will upgrade the disc to a larger one, more aggressive looking one. Just need some $$$ first to do that.

Where did you live before Tsimi? I just assumed that you'd always lived there.

Ok, some background Info about me. My parents are Greek and I was born and raised in Zurich, Switzerland in 1978. Married my current wife (Japanese) and moved to Japan in 2006.

Just came out of a 2nd hand bike parts store. They were selling a 5BM engine for $60 if only it would have been in better condition...

Cool, I had a Greek girlfriend when I lived in Florida. It was great because her parents owned a bunch of liquor stores... I think that's the reason I stopped drinking lol. Seems like you've had an interesting life, or at least seen a lot of interesting sights.

Yeah, I have seen some stuff thus far in my life. Good and bad stuff.
Today I finished the 5BM engine. Put on the Polini Sport BBK and cleaned all the parts that were oily or dirty. It took me over 30 kicks to start the engine so I got worried for a moment there when it didn't fire up after 10+ kicks. I also swapped back the CVT stuff from one engine to the other to have the exact same setting to compare. Verdict, POWER UP! Response and torque definitely have improved. Very strong running and very quick acceleration. When I went for a test drive I made a right turn and cranked it a bit too early and the front wheel went up for a brief moment and my heart dropped down to my knees for a second there. Need to be more careful with the throttle now.
I am glad to see that all the work was worth it and if someone would ask me if trenching makes a difference then my answer would be yes definitely. Still I wouldn't know how much difference there is between a hand trenched case and the "factory" trenched 5BM case. The reed block is angled too and that might be also a factor to consider.
Now next would be to install the 19mm PHBG carb but I think I got the wrong throttle wire. The part that goes into the throttle unit or grip, or whatever you call the thing that is on the handle, is larger then the stock one. Same like those from large bikes. I need to open and look inside once to see if I can work something out.

Oh and btw. the 2nd circlips went in very easy both times for the stock top end and the BBK. I installed them similar like Lucass does with his C clips. I just used pliers to hold it in place and then pushed it in with a minus driver. It was impossible for me to twist them inside with the pliers.

The end that attaches to the throttle is larger than the carburetor end. That throttle tube is also plastic and easy to modify if needed

spaz12Not that end. The 90 degree bendy piece that suppose to go inside the throttle unit. Not the cable itself. I think I needed something like this scootertuning.ca/en/carburettors/5124-throttle-cable-toxik.htmlbut i got this www.webike.net/sd/21415350/Look at the 90 degree thing. The toxik one is a plug in and hold with a plate type which is what my Jog currently has but with 2 wires instead. And the throttle cable I bought is a screw in type which probably won't fit or maybe it can fit but can't be hold in place since there are no threads there.

I think spaz is referring to the actual throttle, plastic and easy to make larger by reaming. I bought a few throttle cables on eBay, they look like the one you linked on scootertuning. But you can get them in cool colors! The have been durable so far. Make sure you adjust the cable so you get WOT!

Thanks nelsonI just ordered a new throttle cable, hopefully the right one this time. Too bad it won't make it this year anymore. I wanted to finish it during my off days.

I understand what part you mean now. Maybe you can get creative and make something that will hold it up in there? I'm thinking something similar to the part that holds the enrichers on carbs? Only smaller. And if the threads are larger than the bore where the tube goes in, maybe thread it? Just a few thoughts.
