I didnt even think to check the damn gear lube when I put my TMS BD50QT3 together. Cranked it up today and hear this swishswishswish sound coming from the rear. First though was the clutch shoes just barely touching the clutch bell. Rev'd it up and with the clutch engaged i could still hear it and obviously it couldnt be the brake shoes since I could hear it with the wheel not spinning. I though ohhh crappp. Drained out what little gear lube was in it and it quite a bit of glitter came out. It was about 1/3rd full or so. I ran some through it, filled it up, took it around the block 4 times and changed it each time. Its clear now and quiet but yeah some damage was done Crap. What a bone-head move. :scared:

Hopefully nothing too serious was done. It sounds like you handled the problem well though.

Bent, Do you know if Enviromoto does bearing pressing service? If it comes down to it id like to know ahead of time where i need to send the gearbox to have some new bearings pressed into it.

No idea. You may be able to get the gears you need (if it becomes an issue) to drop in. Hard to say.

Yeah, the gears appear easy enough to do, the only snag I see is pressing new bearings into it since I have no bearing press or pullers.

Speedy I just realized that you are from cary. I am right in raleigh. There is a great machine shop that we have been using for years and I am sure that they can do the job and do it right. They are called THOFF and they are located right off of capital blvd. Near peace st. Let me know if you can not find there info on google and I will get it to you.

Thanks bill, yeah it was a great day. I spent the day cleaning around the property. I wont be riding a whole lot until I can rebuild the gearbox. Cranked it up today and heard that same scrape-scrape-scrape noise. Went for an 18 mile ride and and dumped the gear-lube and sure enough, full of glitter again. I hope its just a bearing. Bummer!

that sucks. My scooter seems to be surging when warm. I also notice that when it is real cold out that it runs great but when it is warm out i have to kick it a few times to get it to start and has much less power. When it is cold first kick and it screams. I am relieved that the motor will be here soon.

New motor? where is the motor swap party gonna be? 2t or 4t? Sounds like possibly tight valves.

Or a rich/lean condition?...
If your trans has a bearing going, im sure you can replace it without a press. I dont think the gears themselves would be hurt, but who knows until you look.?. Heat and cold work wonders with trans bearings.

I have a friend who wants one like I have and is willing to pay me to do a through PDI with premium parts like belt, spark plug, fuel and vac lines, manual fuel petcock, sliders, clutch springs, catch can, 86 the stock airbox and install an aftermarket air filter with a 78 main, and possibly a stereo like brents. With the profit I can probably rebuild my gear box AND get the a 72cc BBK for mine.
Also I have been watching all the civil unrest in the middle east. Hosni Bubark in Egupt has stepped down after 40 years of rule. There is more conflict in Bahrain and Lybia and most concering, Iran.
All this is going to drive oil prices way up so we can all fully expect gas prices to skyrocket IMO which I believe will stimulate scooter sales. I live in a collage area and plan to put flyers up on the local bulliten boards at NCSU and the like, newspaper too. I have the bike for my friend coming and have already been given a fat deposit to buy all the upgrade parts.
I also plan to buy another to sell on Craigslist. I put mine on of $875 just to see what response i would get and I got tons of emails saying they were very interested. I took the post off but it seems that I would have no problem selling a new one at that price, possibly a little more. If I buy 2, my price goes down which would make an even better profit. I am also considering buying one to part out on ebay and try to make the money back so that I can get a free engine out if it.
Here is my craigslist posting:

A little about myself. All through the 1990s I was employed as an automotive technician. I have plenty of tools including pneumatic with compressor. Air Cooled VW is my specialty which have much in common with a scooter engine. I have owned 2 1967 Beetles, a 72 "Super Bee" with a sunroof and a 1986 Camper. All were in much better shape when I sold them.
If a chinese scoot is assembled correctly and throughly, they can rival their Japanese and Tiawanes counterparts..
I have a nice large concrete work area so If you have a bike that needs repair that I can handle, I am open to discussion about it. Please email me so we can discuss it.
Your thoughts?

I think you did a good job putting the ad together. Will you be able to work with the distributor or dealer for warranty items? If so, that would be a good selling point that would put you another step ahead of what some of the random businesses that sell scoots out front are doing.

Check out the regulations though. I think when I looked at WI laws, any more than 4 vehicles sold a year required a license/permit of some kind, and a certain amount of indoor showroom space...
