Disagree
I would never cut into a CVT cover.
Drill and put holes in strategic spots, agree, but cutting, no.
I think the drag leagues in europe made it against the rules after several engines broke in half

Nah, but it'll look similar to that when it's done. Here's my Zuma's. the black one is an 08 and the blue one an 05 The blue one is getting all my good parts It still needs a lot of parts

Oh my... .. I like the blue one. I also have a 05 & 08 2T Zuma's. I ride the 05 now. The 08 will be a project in the future since so close to being satisfied and done with customizing it. I think i will stretch but not slamming it like the ruckus peeps (seriously though alot of the ruckus tuners do good work. It's funny though when they attach a zuma motor/cvt to it cuz were so much faster, heck im faster then 150cc 4T

The scoot looks good. Great find good thread. Keep it up. But I would agree with the chopping of the CVT cover as not to be a good choice structurally speaking. The cover acts as a stiffener for the swing arm. Also the kickstart will eventually break. Heck I've broken ones that weren't modified. Don't get me wrong it looks good, but a cut CVT cover is a Show n Shine scoot not a daily driver. I speak from experience. Be safe and keep tuning.

I am very nit picky. No, a CVT needs cooling, especially with the 2T high RPM's. Daily drivers, especially, need an open air flow through the CVT to cool them off, prevent the belt from getting too eaten up and the clutch to slip. This was picked up very early by the industry, see Top Performances CVT cover for Minarelli or Piaggio's blatant CVT cover design where you can just unplug two plastic/rubber pieces to get air flow. Open that CVT with proper holes in the front and the back. Get some flow. But also dont be scared to open it up once a week, clean that variator, degrease it, check your rollers, (sandblast the variator or sand it down if you are a hardcore CVT nut like me), and see if your belt still holds up. TLDR: Closed CVT cover -> Hot, bad for belt Open CVT cover -> chill, dirty, clean often

That cvt cover adds a great deal of strenght to the cases. Especially needed when you have a powerful engine. I would NEVER drive it without a cvt cover...because the engine can break, especially those thin minarelli shortcases with their deep cvt covers....
Aerox cases for example have a flat shallow cvt cover and there's a lot more strenght in the cases itself.

Not long after the forum started, one of our members that rode without a CVT cover had his engine case break in the center of the CVT area while making a turn. Here's a pic of it :

While that is not a Yamaha case, the Yamaha has a little more meat than the Chinese clones. I still see how the cover would add some integrity. I wouldn't want to run without one, especially if you're riding two up, or heavy. Cutting one in half would be the same as not having one. Like you said though, your bike, your choice, just be careful. A guy could get injured losing the rear end at speed.
