So this weekend I was cruising Craigs list looking for a new build when I found a 2002 Hyosung Prima that I found intriguing. I researched and found they had the Morini engine. I have been working on a Minarelli for a few months and decided to take on the challenge. This was the listing that as you will see was to good to be true and made me laugh.
scooter $300 OBO - $300 (Winston Salem) Hyosung prima
condition: excellent fuel: gas paint color: blue title status: clean transmission: automatic
I have a Hyosung prima 50cc with a 150cc gug and racing clutch spring it has a new CDI box new tires and all parts. It needs a new sparkplug coil and that's it. It runs 90mph top end. Please feel free to call me at show contact info
Craigslist won't let me add pics so just ask for pics.
Of course I knew it didn't have a 150cc gug (I figured he meant jug). The 90 mph I thought was just to much to resist. Of course I knew it wouldn't be running but after all the condition was excellent and the title clean. When I got there this is what I found:
Well it was Blue. Clean and excellent condition no way. He had no title and was reluctant to sign a bill of sale. The tires had very little wear and the best was the odometer only had 383km on it. The engine was so dirty that I wasn't sure if the mileage was accurate. The guy then said he would take a $100 for it and I figured what did I have to lose I could sell the tires and wheels for that, not to mention the low mileage speedometer. Of course the first thing I did when I got home was look to see if it was stolen, it wasn't.
So I now have my next project to work on, for now it will sit to the side as I finish getting my pink scoot running and back together. Here it is in my garage:
I hope to get into it the next few days and see if the odometer is correct or not. I'll try and keep everyone posted as I work on this. Searching 49ccscoot I see very few references to Morini engines so I hope I raise a the sites awareness to the other 50cc 2 stroke scooter engine.

Make sure you put some tires on it that are rated for 90MPH!

Did you use VinCheck to look it up?

Yes, and it came back with nothing.

It does not work. I reported two scooters as stolen and neither of them are listed on there.

Here's one of my police reports with a VIN you can check yourself. I would strongly advise calling the police department to make sure. You don't want to be caught riding a stolen scoot.

We have to register them in NC, I'll just take care of that and see if it comes up.

I able to get into it yesterday and discovered some interesting things. I got the coil to work by installing the ground wire properly and attaching the spark plug boot. The PO had simply stripped the wire back and tried twisting it around the screw. I trimmed it back and screwed it in the way it should be. It still wouldn't start, the finger compression test indicated not enough compression. I decided to pull the head and replace the gaskets. It was all original Hyosung parts and the cylinder still had the swirls from when it was made. I doubt the POS rehoned the cylinder.
I'm starting to think the mileage is accurate and it only has 383km. I checked the speedometer by spinning the front wheel for a while and it works.
I then checked the CVT, it was tight like it has never been off. It was filthy inside with worn belt.
The variator and clutch were caked with belt from slipping or something. The variator still had the restrictive washer in it and you can see how much of the variator isn't used.
Its a 722X16.5 Mitsuboshi belt and Scrappy has a 666X16.8 belt listed as being for that engine, I guess I'll need to do more research to get the answer. The clutch is really caked up and looks like it might be a replacement. The shoes look like the original thickness but look like the have chips out of them.
I know it's getting gas because there is a pool in the bottom of the crank case from all of the time the PO was trying to start it.
Looking at the grips and front brake shoes I think its safe to say that the mileage is accurate but that it was abuses and not take care of. While I wait for new gaskets for the cylinder I'll start cleaning the engine and Carb. I'll see what a mess that is. More on that when I get another day off.

Sounds like you're giving it the attention it deserves. I'm sure you'll have it purring in no time!

I haven't been able to work it this week is to friggin cold to be handling bare metal. My garage just doesn't get warm and the flourescent lights don't get bright enough. I did go out and get these pictures. It looks like it may be a generic replacement because it has no markings and the plastic on it is much whiter then the plastic on the connectors. But here are pictures:
I hope that helps.
Do you have a Prima?

Its currently giving me a spark so its not high on my list at the moment. I hope to get the bike back together next week when my work is slower and its warmer. Is there something you know about problems with this CDI?

The problem I have yet to figure out is finding one that is a cheaper aftermarket that actually works... all I know is the only cdi that truly works is a genuine replacement.
