My Lathe. It seems I blew the motor drive controller when I was parting a piece of aluminum and locked the lathe up. Currently looking for a substitute controller that does not cost $200 + Remind me, what type of lathe do you have?

I do not see any damage on the board, but there is the telltale smell of burnt electronics near the relays. Checked all components in circuit with diode function on DMM best I could, nothing seems to be open or shorted. Surprisingly the fuse did not blow. The motor itself is fine, I put 12V DC on it and it runs as it should.

Very similar to my little 7x12 lathe. I have been considering setting mine up with a standard AC motor drive with a variable speed pulley on the motor. I think many people have considered that option when their motor control has typically sacrificed itself to protect the fuse. Mine does not have any RPM display, -probably a cheaper version. I find that a display can be fabricated if needed. My lathe exists as pieces in a box picked up at a sale. I think the drive works. Let me see if I can find the video for that AC motor drive setup. Edit: Found one part way through this vid: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVkWQLbPo60

I saw where people were doing conversions. oldskool just ordered the AC conversion for a larger version lathe, dirt cheap. I sorta just want to get this one going as is, I don't want to turn it into a project that I may not have time to finish.

I understand. So many of my tools are down for repairs etc that I would have to fix four, five, no six things before I can fix one... I have just run out of round tuits and steam.

Not any work on at present with school holidays starting so sat watching the idiot lantern ( television) with Yolanda not something I am into TV very often. Cleaning program then a decluttering one. They should be banned! I ended up going out into the shed with a inspection light, firstly chucked out engine bits and tidied a little then sorted tools

Today I worked on hunting Easter eggs with the grandchildren and they got a medal and a cup as well as finding lots of eggs. All put on by a local cafe and hairdressers. Then off to Joio for coffee and food.

One of the guys that I've been riding with a little got in touch last night and asked if I could help him with a crank replacement on a Jog engine. I told him I wasn't sure how much would get done that night because it was after 8PM already. Got it back together at 1:20AM. He had pulled the engine in a rush and never cleaned it. It looked more like an ATV engine by the amount of dirt and grease caked on, which is not how I want to work on them. I don't like trying to work on what needs to be clean with dirt everywhere, but there's no time to clean anything but sealing surfaces on that timeline. Now the bench and a pile of tools is covered in dirt and grease. Fun stuff, but he's had a lot of trouble blowing up engines so maybe at least he'll have a solid bottom end. I wouldn't mind helping with the new 70cc top end because he didn't know what a squish check was, but I was more than ready to call it done. He says he just likes to hear them fire up quickly so he's probably going to slap it on today and I'm the opposite and would rather take a week to get it together if I had to and be sure it's a good setup.

I thought you did not work on other people's stuff. Now you have a mess to clean up. I hate it when people are not willing to take the time to do the job right. Especially when they come back complaining that something blew up or quit working.

Especially when they come back complaining that something blew up or quit working. This is more of a favor for a friend. I didn't expect anything for it. He actually tried to give me $100 before he left. I took $40 because he didn't have bearings and seals and I had spares, so it paid for that and shop materials used along the way and cleanup. His plan was to leave the seals in and pull the bearings off of the old crank to reuse them. He figured since it was low miles on the original engine, that stuff would be fine. If I'm doing a crank it's getting new bearings and seals. He does paint and body work so he said he hopes I need paint someday when I wouldn't take more money.

Paperwork can be IS the shits... I always hated it. If I had a time machine I think I would go back and kill the people that invented paper and alarm clocks, maybe even clocks in general. Life was better with Sun dials, dirt and/or clay tablets.
Computers just suck.....

Cycle training this morning at Llangwryfon and one of the better elementary schools to work in. Even better is the staff room with coffee waiting for me as I arrive at 09.00 . Being retired and working isn't so bad😊
