Hello everyone I'm new to the site. Just checking in to say it's been pretty hot here in the Detroit area and I'm a heating and air conditioning contractor and it's been very busy. Oh yeah, and still finding time to work on my scooter lol.

It's hot here too. hvacjay I have been trying for two weeks to get the contractor that installed my new HVAC system to come and fix it. It is only two years old and would not start up this year, probably a cap or contactor. The condenser fan runs but not the compressor. I can't even get him to answer his phone or call back. I am busy doing a custom install of a 5k room AC unit into my bedroom. I have a room AC in the office and I am getting tired of sleeping in an easy chair. I just don't slap a room AC into a window because it damages the window. I build an insert to hold the unit.

So you're installing a through the wall unit for the bedroom and you're going to cut a hole in an exterior wall ? That's not the same property where you're having issues with the two-year-old AC system correct?

I am installing a 5K BTUH window unit in the bedroom window. It is not a through the wall unit. It is the same property as the new (Nov 2017) whole house system. I am just getting tired and frustrated with sleeping in my office where I have another window unit. The big downside is the rest of the house is HOT and HUMID which is not good on my tools. A 5K window unit is about $150 but the added parts bring it to about $200 installed.

That blows. So you have a nice New two year old forced air system in your house but you're having to live off of window units? What brand is the system in the house?

It sounds like you might be pretty hip to HVAC systems maybe you're a tech yourself? If you have any questions about hvac Diagnostics or systems feel free to ask. The same goes for anybody that's participating in these conversations with me I really appreciate it.

Yeah, it sucks. Johnson Controls Unitary Products, A scroll compressor #TC7B2421S, the nefarious N coil C424BRAA1A (trying to read his writing), and matching TG9S060B12MP11 furnace. I am lucky I didn't take the contractor up on his offer to remove the office window unit and haul it away for me...
I was a mechanical engineer before a stroke wiped me out. I also try to pass on what little I remember to other members.

I have a DIY unit I can send you; just needs ice . a lot of ice . so much ice I'm not using it. apparently the garage ALSO is TOO LARGE for it to effectively cool out there and the fan I have is also too large and only serves to melt the ice . DUD. I'm pissed . sorry you're having A/C troubles too . I haven't given up tho. never say never .

Wow. I am in a very similar situation right now. I just turned 47 years old I've been sick for a year-and-a-half with heart palpitations shortness of breath fatigue you name it and the doctors can't figure out what's wrong with me. Other than my primary care doctor I've been to a rheumatologist, neurologist, pulmonologist, endocrinologist, and I am currently seeing a cardiologist which is basically the last specialty doctor on the list. I have to go for a heart stress test next Monday and I'm praying that they find something wrong with me. Being sick for this long I haven't been able to work either. I barely can get out of bed to even mess around with the scooters outside or cut the lawn Etc. I'm a licensed HVAC contractor here in Michigan and I've lost so much business so many customers if I can ever get better I'll be starting over from scratch.

Man that sounds familiar. I am so sorry. I wish you luck. The Cardiologist is the first specialty doctor I started with. Remember, Doctors 'practice' medicine, they don't actually know more that how to wave feathers and rattle a gourd, kind of like some scooter 'mechanics'. I have a brother in law that is a licensed HVAC tech. Unfortunately the warranty I have on my home HVAC system is violated if I or anybody but the original installer works on it. I am not sure how anyone would know but....
My sig says I am 67/98 years old, that is my chronological age is 67 but my mental age is 98. I make really stupid and dangerous mistakes all the time when I work on stuff.

Most of the HVAC equipment companies will honor the warranty as long as it's a licensed contractor / technician working on it. You should be able to find somebody local that is a Johnson Controls unitary dealer and they should be able to come out repair it Etc and just Bill Johnson Controls it shouldn't cost you anything.

Thanks, that is good to know. I will call a local company. According to the installation directions the company that installed it cut a lot of corners. I installed a Sears 12.5 SEER DIY unit back in 1985 and followed every instruction to the letter. It lasted a long time, well 32 years, never even needed a charge until it died. Then it was just (maybe) better to install a new unit than to find the leak, repair it, and recharge with R22/R12?. I think corrosion in the evaporator probably killed it. Copper coils and aluminum fins probably did the dirty deed. Copper and aluminum really don't get along that well even if most companies use them.
IMHO aluminum SUCKS!
