Hey guys,
I bought a 2003 Yamaha BWS50 that came with a extra Leo Vince exhaust that was really rusty. So far I've used a Scotch-Brite pad, baking soda and lemon juice and gotten so far but the really thick rust on the pipes seems really tough. My plan is to paint with some good high heat black paint. Should my next step be sand paper? Thought I would be able to upload a image? Thanks in advance for your help.

If it were me, I would use a wire brush on a drill...and safety glasses because those wires pop off now and then. If there are really deeply rusted spots, be careful as you might break through.

Are most VHT paints self priming or is it suggested to prime with a VHT primer? I've seen different information on different sites.
Also what kind of performance difference if any should this make over stock exhaust?

What I ended up doing was used a wirewheel to get off most of it then did a quick 100 grit sandpaper rub down, wash, dry, then repaint, came out beautifully. Like PirateLabs said make sure you wear safety glasses

The way Iv painted my exhausts:
I cleaned it up with a wire brush and got it as clean as I could.
Then wiped it all down prior to painting with lacquer thinner.
Then I hang it and use a torch or heat gun to remove any surface moisture.
Then paint. I have used VHT paints with great success.
If you are doing multiple coats, I repeat the torch or heat gun step.
Take ya time and do light coats. Good luck.

Once its dried, you will have to install the pipe and run it thru a couple heat cycles to cure the paint. If not the paint will scratch pretty easily. It sorta like the powder coat paint process without the electricity.

Thanks, I've read a few people who have had massive peeling when using the primer so after hearing the paint worked fine for you I think that's the route I'll go. Thanks again, everyone's been a big help. I'll post some pictures tomorrow night.

Also what kind of performance difference if any should this make over stock exhaust? Those pipes came with 4.3 gram roller weights and yellow clutch springs and they work very well. You should get them and a set of carbon fiber reads while you're at it. Since you'll have the clutch off to change the springs, this would be a good time to pull the torque converter apart and service it. You'll gain a few miles an hour on the top end and it'll be peppier off the line. You'll have to get used to the motor having to spin up faster before the clutch engages, because expansion chamber pipes need to rev up before you get into their powerband. You'll like after a little bit, if not right away. Oh, you'll need a main jet for the carb one size bigger. I think it has an 80 in it now? Maybe an 82. Those jets aren't that easy to find but you can call zumasrus and get one from them. Don't let them talk you into anything else. Use the stock airbox. Cheers

Id have taken it to just about any muffler or diesel shop and ask if they would soada blast it. Itd take all of 5-10 mins and be an even nice finish.

I'm thinking the lighter rollers and yellow clutch spring were left installed and he only swapped out the exhaust as the Leo exhaust was on this bike previously but he had it removed as he found it too loud, but they are going to check on Tuesday when it goes in for MVI, maintenance, and having the pipe put on and if not already there they are going to put new ones in. I will post pictures of it once installed. Thanks again everyone.
