Kymco dealer just called me, carburetor was full gunk and the float was stuck shut, assumedly from being bounced around on a shockless lawnmower trailer over Iowa's fine roads for 2 and half hours. Carburetor rebuilt, waiting on the airfilter, should have it back in my garage before New Years for around a $300 bill, technician went over everything else, couldn't find anything else wrong, said it was in good shape.

I wasn't going to say anything when I saw it on the trailer but I was taught to never haul anything on it's centerstand but have it ride on its wheels so it's shocks can absorb the bumps. I'm glad it was just a dirty carb.

Got it home in one piece, of course the engine flooded bouncing around on the trailer, but rolled her in the shop, put her on the charger for a half hour and it fired right up just like it did at the dealer. Good to understand the "engine flooded bouncing around on the trailer" phenomenon. I jut had a new old stock Kymco Super 8 delivered today and the delivery guy spent 5+ minutes trying to get the thing start once he rolled it off his pickup in 25 degree weather. I was a bit nervous what I had just bought. 4 Hours later I tried to start the scooter and it turned on and idled smoothly with the first button press.

Message on my phone from Fender's, the scoot is all done and ready to be picked up.
Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and 40 degrees, I got the title and plates today, unfortunately I won;t have a chance to go get it until Friday, at which point the forecast is 1"-3" of snow...
Oh well, I'll trade a ride for a white Christmas any day.

So we went and picked up the scoot today, rode it 10 miles from the dealers to a friends house north of Ames, in city and highway driving, didn;t take long to pick up the handling differences, brakes are going to be a different story, for one thing, I'm not used to having an effective back brake, let alone dual discs up front ") Rode to ledges ans back when I got it home, had the chance to test the emergency stop with a few deer herds, I need practice but no mishaps. On a nice straight stretch I opened it up and backed off at 80 (speedo, not GPS) with it still climbing, I'd have no problems taking this down a 65mph 4 lane with confidence.
The ride is a dream compared to my 50cc rat, video tomorrow.

I own lots of two wheelers including 5 scooters but they al 50+.By no means take this as curiousity not criticism god forbid I criticise a fellow Ioweegen. But with all the really cool 250 motorcycles with almost unlimited potential why a scooter?I have a close friend who can afford any bike he wants but rides these monster scoots 5 and 600 scooters.Ii cannot print his response to me when I ask why.Again to each his own and this is just a curiousity.Maybe I am just old and squeezing that gas tank with knees gives me security.

Pretty simple, I don't want to shift gears, it's just one more thing to interfere with my enjoyment of riding.

I think one of the reason is just simplicity. no mental prep as you would need for a motorcycle, nor any physical prep. (both relatively, of course). it's basically a car with two wheels. kinda.
just get on, turn the ignition, and go.

I would say the mental and physical prep would be about the same, only difference between my scooter and a motorcycle of the same size are the gears, weight and handling are similar to a standard 250cc cruiser, acceleration may be a bit slower and the top speed a bit slower, but it's definitely not a car with two wheels.

Fair enough my main ride is hand shifted revtech with a foot clutch different strokes 110 cu in. Though so faster than most cars.Got me banned at the age of 66 for illegal street speed contests.Thats how I ended up scootering.now I just ride dirty..

I really want a 400cc+ scooter. I think they get the job done for cruising about wherever you want to go. I've driven, but never owned a manual vehicle. The closest I've personally owned was a C4 transmission in a car that had a manual valvebody (must shift, but no clutch). To me manuals are fun for racing and playing, but I still like autos for just cruising and chillin'. That's a blasphemous statement for a lot of gearheads, but they have served me well. I've seen enough people give me crap about an auto and then miss a shift or screw up a launch in their manual cars when we raced, so they do have downsides for even motorsports. I've cruised with people on bikes and cars with manuals while I was on scoots or my auto cars many times, and they usually complained about their clutch/trans when we went to places like car shows with bumper to bumper traffic. They would want to take a break, while I was cool with cruising on. I am a bit of a nut though at times and rode around for 17 hours straight looking for races at red lights during one car show. Even on the scooters I ride for hours on end going red light to red light at the car shows. I think that would be way less fun dealing with a clutch... it's bad enough even on a motorcycle tagged scoot since you get stuck in actual traffic instead of the shoulder here, but that's a little different topic. Big scoots seem to be really comfortable as well. I don't think you'll find anything a whole lot more comfy, unless you want a Goldwing. Even if you do get a Goldwing, you won't have the kind of underseat storage that the scooter has. I don't really like top boxes a whole lot, so the massive underseat cargo space of a maxi-scoot is appealing to me. Just fitting my XXL full-face helmet with a GoPro on the front under the seat would be so much more convenient to me. To each their own. I love super sports too. If I wasn't looking for practical and simple, I'd enjoy owning one. That's pretty much at the opposite end of the spectrum as far as 2-wheels goes, but to me they each have different purposes. You shouldn't really buy something with little to no seat pad and an uncomfortable long-term riding position if you just want to relax and cruise around. You shouldn't buy a comparatively underpowered single cylinder plushmobile if goal #1 is hauling ass. As they say, life would be boring if we all enjoyed exactly the same things.

I had a 1200 Goldwing...it was around 1993 or so and, it was like riding around with a V.W. engine between your legs. Nice ride but a weird center of gravity compared to all of the other street bikes I have owned. I didn't like it a lot...it was OK but not one of my favorites.
