Gaaah! I need some lights. Were you able to make the underglow a surprise for your daughter? She was probably like " oh, dad"

Sort of. She saw them for the first time the other day when we were up at the shop. She was like "OH MY GAWD, THAT'S SO COOL!!"

So I took Kayla's scooter down to the police department so one of the officers could inspect it for the LED lights I had Stan install.. First thing he said was "COOL SCOOTER". Second I showed him the LED's and what not and asked about various colors. He said one problem with the scooter is that some of the led lights are visible. The underglow is not a problem at all, just need to tuck the LED's more under so that their direct light does not shine. As for colors, the only LEGAL colors you are permitted to use while driving, are YELLOW and AMBER (orange). But of course, she can display them all she likes provided the bike is not being driven. I asked about green, and he said no, because the color is too distracting. Yellow and amber are permitted because they are commonly used as extended indicators. This is IOWA's law on underbody LED's. Kayla is cool with that. Orange looks quite cool as well. Even yellow goes well with it. ORANGEYELLOW

Also happy to report... for being a "little girls" scooter, that thing has some serious balls. I'm probably going to spoil her more and do an entire CVT upgrade minus higher gears. I've already seen this cute little monster hit 45 on the dyno with a shitty CVT. Only the best for my brat will do. I can't be satisfied with the initial dyno results. So off to researching I will go..My kid is just tickled so far with how much better it responds over how it ran from the crate. She is by no means a speed demon, she is very cautious. Take offs always scared her a bit before because of how weak the cheap setups are on your average run of the mill 139QMB. Less then $100 in parts yielded me a more responsive engine and throttle that not only am I happy with, it gives her more confidence. Next is strengthening that transmission for her.

Only the best for my brat will do. I can't be satisfied with the initial dyno results. So off to researching I will go.. I don't have one of these yet, but if I had to take a guess on a good variator at a reasonable price I'd try the Malossi. It's intended for some 2T scoots from the description, but others here have used it on a 139QMB. I expect good things from Malossi, after getting used to how nice their OR kit is on my 2T. scooterpartsco.com/malossi/malossi-master-part-list/malossi-variator-for-kymco-2-stroke-scooters?zenid=do6kep1tig40ig05bgf5klmsh5I have a DrPulley around, which is a quality piece, but it also costs $100 or more. Those aside, the Hoca/SSP-G looks like a decent piece for the money at $50. Sorry, haven't got around to getting all of these and testing to give you real results. One thing I think many here with experience with them will tell you is; steer clear of the $20-30 DLH, Koso, (and whatever other names they may stamp on them) variators. They aren't known to last. Many 139QMBs have a straight groove torque driver... some do and some don't. If you have a straight groove TD and it's not getting worn (sometimes they wear the grooves, especially if you cruise at one speed a lot) then you may do quite well with just a varaitor and some weights and springs.

I'll absolutely keep that in mind, thanks a million Brent!! So, I guess now what I'm wondering, is what to do about the muffler. It IS IN FACT restricted. Good info to know for others who might happens to own an ATM50-A1. So do I go ahead and drill it, or is there a decent replacement? I don't want something loud, I need it to have about the same acoustics as her stock one. The performance muffler on my blue TaoTao is quite loud, don't want that kind of noise on hers. Like to find something in RED actually, or maybe CHROME to reflect those LED's. Her stock muffler has chrome and works well in conjunction with her LED's. I plan on changing out her red engine fan for a chrome one as well just so I can pick up any bit of underglow possible.

scooter swap shop has a variator for the dio that will fit nice. comes with the vari and back plate. it the p.g dio variator and its under $40. they did have (and may still) the p.g.cnc drive face. i have the face and love it, i may swap my ncy golden pulley out for the p.g. it may be even lighter, its made cute if nothing else. you going to let her shoot for the speed list? she mite would be proud to be on the list with dad. if not hopefully you will ride it for the list, we need more 50mph qmb's om there. oh and the scoots looking better and better. nice job!

If I make a run for the speed list, I'll have one of my friends do it. Although if I could get her to do it, I'd expect her 115lb frame would give better results. I doubt she would want to try though.. 30mph is about her limits for speed.

So I have an idea on the muffler. I completely forgot I have a brand new, never used, muffler sitting on the shelf in the garage that came from the Blue TaoTao. So I already have a spare stock muffler to experiment with. Like I said before, I don't want to alter acoustics too much. So I'll have that muffler drilled out and the restriction removed and see what results I get with it. If it's not too much louder then stock, I'll go with that. I actually prefer that restriction because my target powerband for her, is more low end based then top end. I know any little bit I take from low end to gain top end/performance must be slight on the pipe's end. So I'm thinking, if the simple mod works out, I'll have Drew's gang do a VHT paint job on it and turn it either red, pink, or white depending on what's available in VHT. Saw someone do a cool mod on here with lettering on the pipe as well. I'll have to think about that one for a while.
I've looked and looked for aftermarket pipes, they boost performance, sure, but nothing that provides the subtlety and acoustics I seek.

I firmly believe loud pipes save lives. If the cagers are annoyed by my noisy scooter, then they see me and hear me. I'd rather be "that guy" and be seen than be quite and be unseen by these crazies.

It's not the cagers that are the issue. It's my daughter's Autism. The loud noise can drive ya insane! Neither her or my son tolerate them well. If it wasn't for that, I'd buy her one of those cool prepainted pipes like they sell on eBay.

He has some supersensitive hearing, so 80-90db sound is almost like 140db sound to us. A trucker hit his air horn at another nearby car once and it put him into a panic we couldn't calm him down from for 3 days. If i could help find a low noise pipe for you... but it seems so many are designed purely for performance, not noise reduction.

I wonder if we can find some padding sort of thing for her face helmet if nobody can find a pipe. But obviously it would be blocking her hearing in general which might not be a good thing. I honestly don't know how people ride with headphones in there ears lol.

They're not attractive (no offense), but FrankenMech used a Walker 22266 Quiet-Flow Stainless Steel Muffler (for a Honda Civic) on his 139QMB powered reverse trike. Quiet and not restrictive. You could build something. Most people like loud pipes and I think if it's louder it feels faster too, so that's what sells.

That would be this one: shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/walker-quiet-flow-ss-muffler-22266/5292093-PProbably looks good on a 3 wheeled bike, but not on an ATM50. But now that you mentioned "WALKER"... I did find the following on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B000C936WIThat, I think I can work with. Leaves room for letters or numbers (even graphics) mod on the side. Looks like 2&1/2" in/out. Much potential!!
