does it have a fuel return? maybe the fule returning is hot when engine is in running temp making the fuel in the tank hot you could add a cooling kit on the return if that is the issue. No. It’s gotta be heat soak. It heats the tank up more as it sits without the engine running. Louvers or vents or whatever you want to call them are free and if done right you won't even notice them. Vertical cut, 2 horizontal cuts and relieve scribe back of plastic and push in. Secure side with pieces of plastic, popsicle sticks and adhesive, and viola vented plastic that you hardly even notice. Use tape and don't mess up the paint too much and it will look factory unless someone really knows the bike. Use your heat gun on the fold line. You want fancy racing look, wire mesh on the inside and fold outward so everyone can see your fancy racing intake. want fast n furious, add l.e.d so you can see your racing intake 😆 This is much easier on paper. I tried on a panel from the Keeway Venus that sits in a corner. The idea is easy enough, but bending without paint wrinkling or deforming unintentionally is tough on curved panels. I’m sure I could do better as this was a quick test, and things could be smoothed and sanded… but I’m not trying this on the TMAX. Risk vs reward ain’t worth it to me. I do have these covered holes in a panel on each side. I’ll prob pop the covers off. Don’t expect much from that, but it doesn’t look like a high risk area if moisture gets in there and maybe it can add some small amount of airflow or ventilation. Got it stripped down to access the tank. Gotta love how easy Yamaha makes it to access pretty much anything on the TMAX. 😑

Another old drift technique is spacing the panel out some. Used to use washers stacked up on the hood hinges to open the gap at the rear of the hood. Sounds stupid but where the turbo sits on the Sr it actually helped a little bit and could actually feel the heat coming out from the increase in opening,
Could maybe help out the T max and not look terrible. Space out the panel on the top and remove the seal if any.

Do you have room to fab up an aluminum heat shield mounted between the engine and tank with an airspace between them?

Do you have room to fab up an aluminum heat shield mounted between the engine and tank with an airspace between them? I think it would have to be a pretty perfectly shaped piece. Here's where the tank sits. Right over the cylinders and crankcase. Here's the foam from the factory. The thick piece of foam seems unnecessary to me. It touches, but it looks like without the thick foam it wouldn't touch. I'm probably going to try removing it and coating the whole bottom of the tank with the heat reflective stuff when it arrives and whatever I can of the sides. I checked the CVT while it's apart. I wanted to have a look sometime before TN in June anyway. The belt is 31mm. New is 32mm and the service limit is 30.5. Last time I replaced the belt at 31mm at 28,000 miles. It's at 31mm again ~11,000 miles later. The variator seems to cause much quicker wear as some had said it would. I still think it's worth it because the bike is so much more fun to ride now. I ordered another belt and a new collar for the front axle that drives the speedometer. The collar has been broken for a long time and still works fine, but for $34 I figured it was worth replacing. Total of another $200. When I took the body panels off, the Malossi fuel controller would require me to remove more panels and disconnect it at the injectors, coil and CDI. That didn't make sense to me so I cut the harness and ordered 2 different 8-pin connectors. Generic and Delphi. I figured I'd make use of whichever was leftover at some point. Both look like good setups, but I liked the Delphi better so I installed that.

What about this stuff on the tank? That's roughly what should be arriving soon. Adhesive backed 12" x 48". amzn.to/3y39y7f

I got some panels back on. Leaving one side apart because the belt should be here Monday so I’m gonna do that while it’s apart and replace the front and rear brake pads and speedo collar. I took the cover off of the stock side vent and with the shiny coating it’s now easy to see that it aims at the tank. Probably won’t do much, but it’s free and easy.

Be interesting to see how much air it moves at speed. The way it is shaped actually looks promising. High speed air over the outside edge creates vacuum on the inside of the port says simple physics, now the question is does it and how much 😆

I got the belt in and cleaned the CVT up a bit and regreased the variator. I was going to do the brake pads and speed sensor, but realized I bought 1 set of front brake pads for a bike with 2 calipers. Oops.

That's why big bikes are so expensive 😉 To put that into perspective... I had a major fail on the two-stroke which is an expensive racing engine. The whole new top end is $500. I had a fuel pump issue and a routine belt replacement (accelerated by mods) plus brake pads for the TMAX. That was about $600. It may be relevant to note that the cylinder kit life on the 2T was ONE OIL CHANGE INTERVAL for the TMAX. I'm gonna guess if it lived it's best life and I wasn't playing with the big carb, maybe two oil changes worth of life. I just hope things don't keep going like they have for the last 2 weeks or I'll be forced into scooter retirement before the end of the week day. The really scary part of all of this is to imagine you can't DIY and have to pay a shop. Suddenly high quality stock-ish bikes are the only things that make any sense. I was thinking about this the other day. My friend with a 2008 CBR600RR with 50,000+ miles on it bought it new in '08. He added exhaust, power commander, filter and tail tidy shortly after and then different sprockets a little later. It has never had anything other than routine maintenance things aside from that. Never left him stranded or waiting for it to cooperate. That's a 100-something HP, screaming high RPM, 170MPH (speedometer indicated), 4 cylinder. Meanwhile, I'm on my 2nd fuel pump just trying to scoot around with 40-45HP. Can't really complain much other than the pump though.

I took the TMAX to the beach to ride with 4 GY6 scoots. All are modified. I showed up where we were supposed to meet and sat there for an hour and a half because apparently one of their fans came off while they were headed there and they had to get it fixed. I got a gallon and a half of fuel just prior to stopping, but still maybe a mild test for TMAX fever. We stopped 5-15 minutes a few other times but no long stops. It’s kinda weird riding the TMAX with them in OC because some of them want to ride the bus lane and some will ride with me in traffic and some go back and forth between. I told them I cannot ride the bus lane or I will get pulled over and ticketed, but they should be fine in traffic and at worst only a warning would be likely. I see scoots do that somewhat regularly down there. Didn’t change anything. They still rode like that, which IMO draws attention much more than just being in a group. Not that we wouldn’t draw enough attention anyway. I’ll prob have some shorts or possibly a vid up at some point. Watched one guy almost lose it in a wheelie and wind up like Superman hanging on, huge burnout by another and then it rained and he was WOT taking off sliding around multiple times. Had to laugh when one guy saw girls getting selfies on the sidewalk and slowed abruptly to stop and get in their shot. It was definitely not smart riding, but they’re entertaining to be around. LOL EDIT : Here's one short that they wanted to see...
