I may be getting a honda spree, the tiny one geared Japanese 2 stroke 80's Pop gun.
I'm just wondering if anyone here has one. What they have done with them, and how do they deal with its slow speed.
I haven't joined the spree forum yet, but I will.

One of mine: hondaspree.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=33932To make a Spree fast, the best way is to swap the engine. There is the other way of going with a 48mm BBK, but for the money you'd need to spend, it can add up pretty quick.. trust me, I know first hand. If you want to attempt just a basic BBK setup, $100 will get you going. However, tuning it in right can be a pain. Very easy for people to slip up even if they have done upgrades like this on another 2 stroke. I won't get into the "WHY'S" of it all, but I can tell you EXACTLY what you need to do to get the Spree to run right with just a BBK. First of all, do NOT remove the oil pump, and do NOT remove the airbox. Only do that if you upgrade the intake and reeds to handle it, and have upgraded the stock carb. The BBK kits come with a #90 main jet, which will work just fine for you. After installing the BBK, you'll want to drain the gas tank, and run an additional 80:1 oil/fuel ratio for engine break in. Do this for 1 tank. On the tank fills there after, you want to run a 96:1 ratio. On your airbox, you will want to drill some 3/8ths inch holes close to where the airbox inlet ends. Start with 3 holes and go from there...5 holes usually ends up doing the trick, here is an example image of where the holes go:

And if you're wondering how fast you can make a Spree go... is this fast enough? I still had about 3,000 more RPM's I could have squeezed out of it on the dyno, but didn't want to stress the new piston too much.

Hey....I've been reading your posts all day in the spree forum! It feels like having Robert Deniro coming up to me to talk about acting after seeing me in a high school production of "Oklahoma!" Thanks for the advice. An engine swap isn't out of the question but around here you just don't see many elete or dio scoots. There are lots of sprees and ch80's I guess honda scooters didn't sell well here.

Thanks. I owe alot of what I have done with the AF05 engine to my devotion to my son's needs. He insisted on using the beat up Spree I bought the kids to learn on as his primary bike instead of the brand new scoot I bought him, so I set on a personal quest to make that bike run awesome. I can drive it 45mph+ on a full tank till it runs empty, and not once will it hiccup. Still a bit of work to do with take off. Gonna use a smaller Polini and some stiffer springs for those 15:81 high gears. Right now it's like taking off in second, but once you get anywhere from 10-15mph and pull back that throttle, that MLM pipe kicks in and the bike's power really starts to shine. I love it when people don't believe It'll do over 50, then prove it by following them down the road and keeping up.

Is the MLM pipe the one from treatland? 50mph is not my goal but topping at 40 would be good. If I can get it as fast as my china scoot I'd like that. Same speed but with honda reliability and a smaller footprint in my garage would be ideal

Yes, its from treatland.tv. it's about the only one you can use besides doing a custom pipe to get it past 11,000 RPM

As far as fuel ratio goes, I've never had a scoot with oil injection. My Puch used premix as did my bicycle bolt on kit. Is there a way to control the mix?
Will the oiler have any issues? I haven't seen the scoot yet but it is over 30 years old.

Well, yes and no. It gets kind of complicated. Myself I run 32:1 premix in the tank and have deleted the pump. Others have tried doing this and failed. The reason being, is the stock Spree intake & carb can't handle it. When you run premix in the tank and get rid of the pump, the carb then has to do an extra duty of supplying oil as well as gas. This doesn't work too well because of how the pump operates on it's linear plane. For a decent takeoff and 1/4 impulse power, Spree's tend to like it a bit on the lean side, but then the faster RPM's you pump out, the more oil you need. This was an issue that had me perplexed with the Spree and encouraged me to run the damn thing on the dyno to see what's up.
What I had discovered after doing all kinds of tests and pilot swaps, and carb swaps, pump, no pump.. you name it.. was that the key to unlocking the power of a Spree, is all in how you handle the intake. If you are using just a stock intake, for best performance you want to use the pump. If you have a BBK, you'll want the pump and 96:1 in the tank... However, if you port the intake (and/or reeds, and/or piston cylinder), change out the carb, then you can run premix only in the tank pretty easy.
