Hi all,
I recently started souping up the old work horse. I bought the old girl with all the restrictions removed and a DR 70cc kit. The rest was all stock. I upgraded from the 12mm Weber to a shiny new 17.5mm dellorto, lightened the weights and added a stiffer clutch spring. The thing was zippy and fun. But I want more. I came across a Yasuni C16 for a steal, put that bad boy on, and not to my surprise, melted the piston. But my god was it fun before the failure. I now have a Stage6 Racing MKII Cylinder kit on its way, along with a Naraku HPC Racing Full Circle crank. The variator and clutch is stock apart from the lighter weights and spring. I'm looking for advice on what to do next or any advice on what not to do when getting her all setup. Cheers

You might want to consider a 21mm dell carb with that setup. Plenty of jets to tune with and a cylinder head temperature gauge to help with tuning. Also check the C16 for melted piston, you will want to clean it out so the stuff does not end up in your new build. That combination should RIP!

I would look at Malossi variatiors and torque driver. Possibly a complete over drive like this. Scooterpartsco.com has the best Malossi prices around he also has or can get Vespa parts for a good price.

Pay attention to your jetting.

Thanks people. I was thinking a 85 or 90 for the jet. I have a Polini hi speed variator that won't fit unless I remove the electric starter gear. Might put it in and just go with the kickstart

Very nice selection of parts! It should be a lot of fun to ride when you have it all dialed in! The piaggio engine makes a very good (if not) the best basis for a performance build. Keep us posted with lots of pics

Sounds like a killer build
If i could bother you if you have the stock or your new crank and a pair of digital calipers, could you give me some measurements from it, for science?

17.5 is a no goo on a stage 6 racing cylinder, you want something in the 21mm or + range.

Probably should have mentioned, it's going to be my daily for my commute. About 40mins per day. I want to keep the 17.5 carbie to limit the fun so as to not have to renew the piston and rings every few months. She should still be the fastest Vespa round these parts!

If you are worried about fuel consumption between a 17.5 and 21mm carb then why bother upgrading anything?
Step it up and get the bigger carb to get the most out of the mods you already have. Cool scoot! Let’s see some pictures of it already!

Cool scoot! Let’s see some pictures of it already! I'm not worried about fuel consumption, i'm worried about the extra RPMs that the 21mm carb will create. I'm bottlenecking my setup for longevity of the head. It's still going to tear ass around the streets. I might upgrade to a 21mm when I find that backyard deal on a bugeye that I buy for a case of beer, but until then, I want to avoid having to replace the rings or piston every couple of months.

You're bottlenecking in the wrong place. A smaller carb won't limit rpm's. It only limits power, but will still rev as high as with a 21 or 24 or any other carb.
You don't have to change rings nor pistons that often...only when you take it to the edge of grenading your engine everytime you ride it. The person that told you that was overexeggarating.
If you want to limit rpms anyway use another exhaust like a yasuni R or lower port timings.

Too small a carb at part throttle your passing very little fuel and air, potential lean condition. I’d go to a 21mm for longevity.
