My 18 year old son troubleshot the problem to the coil/plug combo. Feeling optimistic

The part was replaced and we got spark. We got spark and we actually got it to start for a second or two before dying out on us. Now, to get it to the brief starting we had to manually choke it by covering the intake. We made a few adjustments to the carb and didn't get back to the brief starting or starting phase. Does anyone know if there is a default setting for the carb? A starting point we can begin at to ensure we are doing it correctly, which I don't think we are.

frankj, thats great news it,s not dead in the water.Basic carb setting is the air/mixture screw the one closest to the inlet is usually gently screwed fully in and then 2 maybe 2 1/2 turns out,is that air box all cleaned up and sealed tickity boo they are fussy about that.I was wondering if maybe your jets had been "up sized" which would explain the holes in the air box are there any numbers on the jets (you,ll need your readers for that task)

Okay, we got it running, had it idling for 20 minutes or so. We shut it off and turned it back on right after and it started up with no problem. We did that a few times and then let it sit for 20 minutes or so. After that 20 minutes we tried to start it again and it would not start. Does anyone know the cause of that? Also, would it need to be manually choked to start?

Could it be an issue with the automatic choke?

frankj, over here we call them rev and go scoots, the go bit is quite important to the cooling of the engine 20 mins idling won,t help.If it,s running drive it like you stole it (but just around the block).Just unplug the auto choke and take notes then plug it back in and compare.I think it,s running a bit rich, you can adjust that on the needle clip.Nearly there I think

Geoff, do we start it with out the auto choke plugged in? Or do we drive it with it plugged in and then unplug it and drive it again? Also, is there a way to bypass the auto choke to verify if that’s the problem?

frankj, the auto choke is doing it,s job(adding extra fuel) from cold, as it warms up it expands and closes off the extra fuel as the engine warms up .If you unplug the choke from cold it will add fuel untill you plug it back in.You can check if it,s working on a bench test the change is quite dramatic,if it,s running try tiny turns on the mixture screw.Keep us posted

I think we are down to the last real issue. After we run/ride the scooter for a while it doesn’t restart unless we let sit for a few minutes or an hour or so. Has anyone run into this problem before?

How does a new spark plug help. We replaced it when this whole issue started and haven’t drove it much since or even had it running

A 5 dollar plug will just give you a base line start, presumeably you,ve taken all the advice and help freely given and fixed the scoot,so crack on with it.
