Ordered the tires fugaziiv recommended. Ordered 3 since the bike carries a spare and having a spare that doesn't match is silly. Even though I'll never use it (knock on wood).

I totally feel the same way. Over the x-mas break I ended up getting matching Sassy Alligators but my spare is the 10 year old whatever tire. I had all three mis-matched... getting there haha

Sorta clean, ready to start. Seriously before Saturday you couldn't see the floor.

Anybody have a recommendation on a battery for the Vespa? I know I have my preferences in the Lith-Ion world, but in the stuff you'd use in a Vespa I dunno. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

For the first time for real I went out to diagnose the Vespa. I'm new at this 2T thing but some things don't seem right and they attracted my attention right away. First, the battery is dead. Ok, I ordered a modern version of a YB9-B. I think I can charge this one a little bit and play with it until that one gets here. Then I opened then engine cowl in the sunlight and got in there with a flashlight. There is a tankerfull of oil on the bottom of the engine and it's sprayed over to the inside of the rear wheel. Just all over. And it's the oil and fuel mixture. Just noticed that there is way too much oil everywhere, even for a 2T. I started kicking it over with the gas and the fuel on. I thought these might start without a battery. It didn't start. But I did notice oil dripping on the garage floor. It's never dripped. I got down and looked under it and saw more oil that had leaked and just totally covered the underparts of the engine. I believe I traced it back to the exhaust port. Question, with a 2T, if there was a bad connection between the exhaust and the exhaust port, whatever sprayed out of there before it hit the exhaust... would that "whatever" be and oil and gas mixture? Keep in mind that it could have been like that for years, and that the guy I got it from did say he's not a mechanic but he did put a new exhaust on it. Also the exhaust seems to have "specs" in it that are rusting out. SO my big question is where is all this oil coming from? It looks like I'm going to have to tear this thing down anyway because it's a mess. It's coming from right behind the header. you can kinda see where it's sprayed onto the stuff in back. The read wheel on that side is coated. This is a shot kinda up looking at the exhaust port. the oil appears to be coming from there.. it was dripping down on the header and then dripping off the header onto my floor. All the other oil could be spray from that when it was running, or there is another leak somewhere.

I'm reading that a bad union between the exhaust and the cylinder would cause leaks like this. I also read that the U bolt on the holding the exhaust on the stub is not optimal. If that is it, I didn't think it would be so wet.
This jives with what the previous owner told me... he did put a new exhaust on it...
...he also jetted, which might explain the air leak I have to fix.
Fun!

Fun with 2t oil/fuel mix!!! Right now it's only my fingers and wallet that have been soiled. Research, research research. Skimming the Haynes manual. I picked up a Shorai Lith battery that replaces the YB9. The old battery said "fill with water" and I "fill this slot with a modern battery". I also had to get a charger for it. $$ Gotta figure out if this exhaust is worth keeping or if it's salvageable. (possible $$) btw, ballistic batteries went out of business. found this out on my battery search. Cited not being able to compete against Chinese manufacturers along with inability to source quality cells (i'm guessing for the price point they'd need to be at).

Looks like youve got a bad pipe connection there..Your clamp appears to be bottomed out so it cant clamp anymore, need to remove the exhaust and check how sloppy the fit is between the cylinder and pipe, take the clamp off and hacksaw the ends a bit so it'll pinch down some more, keep at it till it does what its spozed to do,also make sure the pipe slips squarely onto the spigot and not twisted to the side due to an ill fitting aft exhaust hanger..Good Luck, keep us posted!

All that stuff will spray out of there if it's a bad fit? Remember, I'm a four stroke guy, and that would never happen on a four stroke. . It just wouldn't be that "wet". That's a new sight to me. Ateast it's easy to tell you have a problem.

It's likely running a bit rich too,so the two stroke slobber will be worse, the key is dont let it leak, then that slobber will be exiting the tailpipe and peppering all of the 4 strokes behind you!

I’d also trace and find the oil lines, replace if needed but make sure you don’t have any additional leaks from those areas.
