I used to go ride my ATV (Honda 400ex) with either of my brother-in-laws but the one has has a summer house for a few years now and I never see him during riding season. The other forgot to pull out and is afraid to get hurt for his kids sake. So it’s been collecting dust for quite some time. I can’t go ride with my kids because I’m to aggressive it’s all or nothing and I’d leave them behind. So my thought is to get a mid-size side by side so I can take the kids with me, or is it they take me... whatever the case. While looking though many sites with many different types it incredible the sweep in price between these things. I wouldnt mind getting something with a manual transmission which could be had for $5K and up depending on the engine size.600cc -1500cc. But this is for them.. at least for now. I’m not talking about the Polaris RZR, they are way over priced, but the clones of the RZR. I guess realistically I’m looking at the 150-300cc range which is around $2-3K. Some of these have a straight (go cart) axle, others have cv axles, and others have a mini auto rear, the later 2 are probably open diff. So I guess the real reason for this long post is the practical side of me says to get the straight axle because if something happened that would be the easiest type to replace even if the others seem like they may handle better. Again these are chinese made vehicles most of which are powered by a 170cc gy6 or 250,311cc LC motors. They are also cvt. I do have a really nice 50hp 440 2T that could use a new home or a Honda LC 360 I could swap in. Opinions on the axle choice. I Sorry for this long post...

Some of those suspensions look a mite 'iffy'. My tube frame DongFang R-trike scoot front suspension got rather 'bendy'. China steel is tinfoil...

I would think the independent suspension would be the performer for a lot of situations and give you a better ride. The straight axle may give you the best straight line traction. The IRS would be the most complex, and that may be a bad thing being Chinese and since it's an offroad vehicle that's sure to take a beating. Straight axle is straight forward. Not a whole lot to mess up there and karts have been making great use of them for so long. I don't really know anything about UTVs or much about karts, but I wouldn't expect the solid axle to be an issue unless you demand the best handling or maybe want more independent articulation for something like rock crawling. I've been in cars with a spool or welded gears and they'll chirp and/or buck on turns when there's plenty of traction. In karts, they'd just get loose in the turn, especially the slick tired kart if any sand were present on asphalt and it would snap around quick once it got loose. Never really bothered me in the offroad kart, but then it was just a Briggs and not very fast.
I'd advise trying to find a UTV forum and spending a little time there browsing to see if you can find many issues or praises of any of them, or just ask them what they would choose for the activities and conditions that you're interested in.

They seem to hold up well from the videos I’ve seen and comments asked. There are some that have better suspension setups then others. I think the only downside of a straight axle is the sprocket hanging low looking to get smashed by a rock, same as my atv. The place I ride is rough so they may be a concern. I guess I’ve got more research to do.

The machine that my gy6150 lives in is a ASW (American Sport Works) UTV that I bought new in 2010. Its a small one and I would compare it to a off road golf cart. I run it on trails on my property and local township roads and the solid axle is a huge benefit. Without it the cart would have a hard time doing much of anything off road. If you pick some sort of half shaft setup you should select a limited slip diff. You can go 4 wheel drive but the price goes up a lot and you lose any sort of simplicity.
These buggys have evolved from gocarts so the general engine and frame designs have been around but the suspensions are fairly new. That's where looks can be deceiving. Something that looks Baha cool could be junk.
That's also where your description of yourself being aggressive might make the cheap stuff not right for you. You might turn it into a wad in no time. It might be better for you to go more $$.
The dealer / service network is pretty similar to the scooter if you go the China route. You might find a dealer in your area or you might be getting your machine shipped to you from a boat.
Also be sure to research the laws / regs where you will use it. Just about every state is different and a lot of states are just now starting to address the UTV and side by side.

As long as it’s 58” wide or under and has a vin number I can register it for off road use here in pa. Dealer network- nope... there is nothing around that I know of so any purchase would just be what I’ve seen online of the vehicles. I agree that I may have to up my budget for one of the nicer products. The trails that I ride are a bit rough with decent sized rocks.Nice to hear you are happy with yours.

The last one is the best in was Joyner , it used a chevy motor called a cherry good unit we sold them for about 3 years . It has a independent rear with like geo axels was good ... The third one down pass The only issue was Joyner went out of business in like 09 some company bought all the parts and they sold them in AZ .. The only problem we had with them was sometimes a transmission went out early on ... Order a clutch when you get one if you get a Joyner

I know about the Chery engines they are used for standby power equipment. They seem to hold up well. “I” would like one of the Joyner products but my kids won’t be able to drive them (manual trans) which is kind of what I’m trying for although it’s really for me. It just seems the larger cc motors are fuel injection, fuel injection and Chinese don’t sit well with me. The third was just to show the half shafts, I’m not even considering that one.

Well I guess if you think about it all current car manufacturers are using Chinese engines, transmissions and fuel management so something off road that won’t see nearly the mileage as a onroad vehicle I guess shouldn’t be that bad.

Unless I come to my senses I think I’m going to go pick this up tomorrow. MUCH more then I wanted to spend but reliablity, resale and features have turned me away from the off brand China utv’s. It’s a 2015 Polaris RZR 900 XC, too bad it doesn’t have a 2T motor. I’ve having a hard time spending this amount on myself, my wife says go for it. But is it a trick...

I have seen those around here with plates on the boulevard before, pretty cool. You only live once. And yeah the wife likely has something up her sleeve if she is telling you go for it LOL!
