Some even pull over when they cross the state line and take off their helmet and hang it on the bike. Some people argue that they've been riding x years and never crashed, but that can change in an instant. So many strange situations or even a momentary lapse of judgement/skill/attention by you or someone else on the road. Riding is dangerous enough without avoiding the thing most likely to save your life on some sort of bet with fate that everything will be OK. Just last weekend there was an accident locally where a parent and a toddler died after being ejected because the parent wasn't wearing a seatbelt and the child wasn't in a car seat. Seems like the same sort of logic as helmets. No plans to crash so we'll be fine.

Oh man you really beat yourself up. Heal up fast buddy.
People at work always laugh because I wear full year all the time. But this is why. One of my friends at school came off a moped at 16. She was only doing 25mph, and still walks with a limp forty years later.

Well in the course of hunting down #5 I did manage to get rear ended at a stoplight. Now granted she did just bump me while I was sitting still accompanied with a “Oh my gosh I’m sooooo sorry!”
Idiot
First time I ever had anything like that happen.
