Speedy, Love that headlamp the big issue with lugging all this candlepower (strobes, emergency lights, flashlights, headlamps) is im travelling in the DAYTIME only, ill add it to my listo f things to get for the trip though, at this rate its going to look like i ripped off a flashlight depot!

You probably aren't imagining things about the size. Some scoots are built with more leg room than others and wider fairings and other differences. You were Right! UM 150 LENGTH 71” WIDTH 27” HEIGHT 47” BAJA SC150 LENGTH 79.72" WIDTH 29.35" HEIGHT 47.23"

scooters dont get updated every year like cars. the only issue for buying a NOS (new old stock) scooter is resale value since 99% of people dont understand that they dont get updated every year and want to pay less like you do because its "outdated". I dont blame anyone for trying to get a better deal on anything though. The year doesnt matter very much with chinese scooters unless its like 20 years old. MRP did every mod you can imagine on a scooter like that including a 180 cc bbk and saw 80mph tucked with no extra load. you will be very very lucky to see 70. WOT 65 is a realistic goal but it wont be cheap. you will need 180cc with a bigger carb, heavily worked over big valve head. cam, upgears etc..and with all the stuff you will be carrying you will be lucky to see 60. I am not trying to burst your bubble but dont expect too much out if such a small motor. If you want to easily cruise at 70 get a 250. The faster you go, the more power it takes to go even 20% faster. My 83 runs 50 on flats with no wind. that doesnt mean that 180 is gonna do 100 since its twice as big. the faster you go the more wind and rolling resistance you have trying to slow you down. Disk brakes are a good idea if you are putting lots of weight on it and are doing WOT all the time and never see rain. a drum works better in rain on a scooter. A heavy load in the rain on a chinese scooter with a disk brake in the rear sounds pretty darn scary to me. ever ride a scooter in the rain? the disk brakes dont work very well in rain. i would rather have a rear drum myself. problem is that few chinese scooter drums are truly round and are impossible to find someone to turn them. I got lucky in that mine is the closest to round on any i have had so i can adjust the rear very close. if i squeeze it hard enough it will lock. A hydraulic drum in the rear would be best on a scooter IMO but i have never seen one. I don't know about that. Drums let water into them and water stays there and sloshes around and gets the shoes and drum face all wet and slippery when mixed with the brake dust. Discs don't suffer from that. And when I run through any serious puddles I just apply the brakes a bit to have the pads scrape the discs dry and all is well after that. If my memory serves me correctly, some BMWs do that automatically for you.

point being on the belt is that i would put the best possible one on beforehand. if the belt breaks along the way and you dont have a variator tool or and impact gun youre screwed. replacing a belt after it breaks is not simply a matter of putting a new one on. the variator must be removed to make sure the rollers are not all out of whack and to clean all the rubber bits out. breaking a belt is the last thing you want to happen on this trip so put on the best you you have.

While i have not had to deal with an ACTUAL belt failure like your talking about yet i am fully prepared, my tool kit has a impact wrench in it (already tested for the variator removal) as well as replacement sliders and rollers, and of course new belts, its not something im looking forward to but i have been told that a belt failure on a trip like this is inevitable, its just a matter of WHEN, i hope im up to the task but im sure i will do fine, ill start with the strongest belt and if i make it halfway ill take the cvt cover off for an inspection and possibly do a preemptive belt change somewhere in south carolina

well to update this thread with some news i have decided to purchase the BAJA
The way I look at it is they all will have their problems, but lets think about this, I have been “training” for this moment, tearing my scoot down and working on it all th time, im sure the baja wont have a perfect life, and granted its got a long journey ahead of it but hey what machine for 6-700 is going to be perfect, apparently baja customer service and parts sucks balls, I know from a call with them their tech support has hold times in excess of two hours (apparently I was told by the sales department this was due to the fact that they just cancelled a lot of parts they used to carry) and the customer service line was a half hour wait, so yeah not the best company.
But hey look at my United motors, it’s a POS, but with money and patience (lots of that) I have managed to keep it alive, im sure the baja will do ok as long as it is cared for right and maintenance properly, hey even if it dies in key west at least ill be in a place where being without wheels is no issue ( a 2 mile X 4 mile island)
