EMERGENCYState Rep. Chip Huggins of Columbia and Rep. Chris Murphy of Summerville SC prefiled a bill on Nov. 29 that would change the licensing requirements for scooters to require everything a motorcycle or car does INCLUDING a drivers license. TIME TO FIGHT SC.m.thesunnews.com/myrtle/db_/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=rXXbNC3J&full=true#displayWrite your state representatives and tell them if they vote for this bill, you vote them OUT!! Also it might be a good idea to find out the bill # and send the information in it to your legislators no matter what state you live in and tell them if they support anything like this in your state you will vote for someone else come election time. TIME TO STAND UP FOR OUR SCOOTER RIGHTS.

I agree that it sucks, but we have the same laws here in Wisconsin.

I agree that it sucks, but we have the same laws here in Wisconsin. We should still fight these bills in other states that dont require it yet though right? I for one will fight it here on NC anytime it comes up. We defeated this in 2009.

This is a money grab in my view. They are trying to create more revenue for the state. Having a tag and a license doesnt make a scooter or motorcycle or car any safer to operate.

My father mentioned a good point. This is a money grab and lots of people who DO have licenses are riding 50cc scooters now who cannot afford gasoline or insurance on their cars anymore. If we cant get to work we cant pay taxes.

well you do know there is an advatage to haveing a plate and a title right
it makes it esier to prove the scooter is yours and it makes it harder to get rid of a stolen scoot it will make it easier to find stolen scoots as if the cops see a scoot without a tag they now have a reason to stop it and if you reported it stolen and the vin comes up as stolen when the cops run it you get your scoot back
as far as not haveing ins thats just a bad idea in genearl you never know when the unexpected is going to happen and you found at fault for an accident or a kid run out infront of you what are they propsing the cost of a plate for a 50cc scooter is here in wi its the same as a motorcycle 23 bucks every 2 years

Sorry guys, but I saw all the "three-time losers" who'd lost their DL for life buzzing around on scooters before the law was changed here. I'm sorry, but somebody who has lost their DL for DWI doesn't need to be driving anything and that's what the license requirement is about.

My MCO and Bill of Sale proves my scoots belong to me I have that for all of them. I also keep them locked. In my view its my responsibility to keep my possessions secure instead of trying to make the government responsible for that and say 'oh well if it gets stolen the gov will know its mine'. Anyone who supports this, think of it this way. It is 100% impossible to legislate away someone elses freedoms without putting your freedoms to do what you love at risk. And also without having to give money to the gov to allow you to do it...and if you dont pay you are a criminal. I can see criminalizing an activity that hurts the public. Riding my scooter just as I am now with no tags in a state that does no require them or anything else but a helmet hurts nobody and I will fight any legislation that tries to criminalize me for riding my bike as I currently am harming nobody to my dying day. I am an American and thats what true freedom loving Americans do.

that's what the license requirement is about. haha no this is about revenue for the state of SC. if you think SC or any state does this to protect you, you are not seeing reality imo. I'm sorry, but somebody who has lost their DL for DWI doesn't need to be driving anything and that's what the license requirement is about. What do you propose they do...? It against the law to smoke in a hospital but if someone does should they be banned from all hospitals?

and the lack of plates in your state also makes it harder to travel with your scooter sure in neighbor states you may get by just fine on the border towns where they know that you dont need plates but when you get farther into neighbor states or to no neighbor states you will be getting stoped all the time and there is a good chance that you will get a ticket and have to go back to court and if your lcuky your scooter wont get impounded
and how does your state pay for the roads here in wi a majority of its thru the registration trust fee and some comes from fuel tax yep what we pay for on our plates pay for our roads so if your not paying reg your not paying for the roads in wi
and haveing plates has saved me when i have traveld to states where mopeds dont need plates lets take mi where they need a sticker but are speed limited a cop saw me on coming at 50mph pulled me over and when he saw i had a plate he was oh sorry i didnt realize you had a plate go about your business
so if your shit gets stollen you will be the one out looking for it and hope that you alone can find it good for you cause im willing to bet that if you get stoped there right now on a scoot they dont even run the vin tag to find out if its stolen but you know if my stuff were to get stolen its nice to know that that there is a better chance of the cops cataching them with the item and that even if its found 100 miles away in milwaukee i will be able to get my scooter back

If my scooter gets stolen I will report it and give them the VIN. I dont need a tag and registration to prove its mine. When providing the VIN to officials in a report I have the same chances of getting it back as you do. In NC there is a database for stolen vehicles like ATVs and other power sports that dont require a registration. I am sure other states have the same system.
As far as travelling out of state and all that, if i travel to a place that requires a tag on my scooter i guess I will have to either keep travelling, dont ride or be prepared to accept the consequences when caught. i bet if you get stopped in a car they dont check the VIN either. If my scooter gets stolen I will report it and give them the VIN. I dont need a tag and registration to prove its mine.

if you dont have a palte i gaurantee in any state that requires plates they will read the vin and run it yes they do look at the vin here just last week i was stoped and had to open the door on the work truck becuase when they replaced the windshield it makes the last part of the vin hard to read you do know they get that info when they run your plate im sure they dont look at every didget but if they say the last 4 of the vin is 4872 they look at the tag to see what the last 4 of the vin is
hell i had to show them where the vin was on my stella when i got hit
so if you go out of state you would be willing to let every cop that comes across you stop you becuase you have no plate
and i can tell you it will happen here in wi plates are optional for trailers less then 3500lbs and there are many times when i head to il or to mi that i get stoped for no plates on my trailer
but again i cant find what they are saying your plates will cost so unless you can show me that i cant see were this is comeing to be a money grab but more like closing loopholes in existing state laws

I spend a lot of time in SC and was even considering a move to Summerville about 6 years ago. I have to go with 'Money grab' for a few reasons . . . .50's still require you to have a car license so the DUI stuff is covered anyway. SC has some of the most backward and corrupt Pols in the world !! They make small Mexican town politicians seem noble. I think that with the huge influx of scooters the long-term price gouging of gas brought about, they see a way to profit from it. I also ride a bicycle for transportation and really stay up on bike issues, and thats what they do whenever there is a fake gas crisis that brings more bicycles out, they call for a registration fee for bicycles. Thats what corrupt authoritarians do . . . Look for ways to part us from our cash.

I didnt post this to debate its merit really, I post it so our members in SC will know that SC is attempting to part them with their hard earned money......and some freedom too. If a person in SC reading it doesnt care so be it.

in NC they dont inspect your vin plate on a routine traffic stop.
I saw this on another forum it it really makes sense to me:
