3 hours of surgery they got the offending kidney out. Doctor said he could not see any cancer elsewhere on the new scan, but wait to hear from radiologist and pathologist for sure. I said no to pain meds, I don't like their side effects and I want to see how bad it will be. However 8 hours later I am beginning to rethink because they had to cut me pretty good. Feels like a bus is parked on my guts. (I would lol but it hurts to much) Thanks for all the well wishes!

I feel the same way about pain meds. I have always been able to tough out that first day or two then it gets easier.
Get well now!

That's good news Scott. Sounds like it went as well as could be hoped for. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Thanks for keeping us updated. I'm relieved to hear the news and that you seem in good spirits considering.
If it gets to be too much, it shouldn't take long to get you some meds. Most of my experience is with scooter crashes, but for prescribed stuff I generally got the prescription on the way home so if it did get bad I didn't have to wait on getting a prescription filled. After the deer I think I took 1 or 2 pain pills total, because there were a couple of nights where it was bad enough that I couldn't sleep and had things to do in the morning. Definitely wasn't trying to take enough to worry too much about side effects/addiction.

I made it home this evening, somehow. Last night and most of today the pain was terribly bad, despite me being fully medicated. The carbon dioxide they used to inflate me became trapped, and I just had to deal with it. Gas pain is no joke. I have 5 incisions total. 4 small with 3 staples each for the robot used to access everything and one large one that is 8 inches long and has 21 staples holding it closed. I would post some pictures but as luck would have it I dropped my phone this morning and broke the screen. My brother took it to a repair shop to see if they can fix it for me. I am fairly mobile I just need help transitioning from sitting and laying to standing, I get stiff very quickly. I hope to get some rest tonight and tomorrow i am completely exhausted.

That gas will go away but it takes some time to migrate into the blood stream and out. Endoscopies and colonoscopies clear the gas faster because of the natural 'vent' holes and it can have hilarious and disastrous effects. I have experienced it all. Any time they mess around inside pieces parts get moved and will take some time to settle back into place, sometimes not where they belong. Problems can happen. Surgery shocks the body real bad. I think anesthesia is even worse. It will take a long time to recover from wounds inflicted on you. Recovery time increases drastically as we age.

Sorry to hear it's been difficult, but glad you're back home and able to get around a bit.

Good to hear about your quick stiffening. Let that get known around the nearest senior exercise place, and you'll have all the home help you want.

Looks very similar to my wife's. But hers are on her back. It's great they have acted so quickly to remove it.

You should see the other guy. Glad you’re on the mend. I too have put off health checks for years. Many to be exact. Others and obligations always took priority. I’m now attempting with much encouragement to regain control over my health destiny. Drs visits bother me. I also have a small hernia which needs fixing…. And the Prostate blood screening came back with an elevated marker….. OldGeek I wish you the best recovery and many long rides ahead.

It's been 2 weeks since surgery and I am doing really good. There were a few bad days but they came and went. The incisions are healing well. I am mostly just dealing with some pre existing conditions that were highly aggravated by the surgery. Pathology report came back and was no surprise, stage 3 clear cell renal carcinoma which happens to be the most common form of kidney cancer. My surgeon said it was well on its way out of the kidney basically following the path of the ureter. They want me to heal up completely before seeing the Oncologist, I have an appointment with one in August. I feel good enough that I may try to ride with my brother on a service call or two this week. No lifting more than 10 pounds, no climbing. However no restrictions placed on aggravating my brother I really feel bad for him, he has had to pick up my slack and be on call this whole time. We have had to turn down jobs because 1 person alone cannot do some things like system changeouts. I have been thinking hard about my riding future. Is it really wise to continue on two wheels? The answer is easy, especially considering my loved ones. However my needs may win this one, I just cant stand the thought of not riding anymore.

Definitely wear a protective vest to safeguard the lone kidney.
