And, Larry, I pose the same question to you - What are you doing besides sitting behind your computer complaining to create the positive change you desire?

I'm answering this as the John Stossel report is playing on YouTube.
There are definitely stupid laws in the U.S. My personal favorite is a law in the town next to where I grew up stating that you were not allowed to wear a t-shirt that might be offensive to a timid person WHILE playing the guitar. LOL However, my point remains the same - even with all of the sometimes ridiculous regulations, it is still much easier to grow personally and financially here than any other place in the world.
Many of the laws that have been put into place because of specific situations that have occurred. It is then our responsibility to make sure that these outdated or poorly written laws get either repealed or changed. I applaud your active role in your local politics. I personally feel that if you are unhappy with something our government (at any level) is doing, it is our responsibility to take active steps to create change.
As far as "Americans are idiots" - do you agree with this?

I tend to think most laws are an over reaction to a situation. Or worse lawmakers making stupid laws so thry can appear as if they are nessary. We have a jury sysrem to weed out silly law or laws that no longer apply. But jurys seldom have an unferstanding of thier power. Or they never get to hear the case.

I tend to agree with you. I think the O.J. Simpson case is one of the greatest examples of when our justice system goes horribly awry.
But, "Americans are idiots" is a glaring generalization that is personally offensive to me and short sighted by the author of such statements. To *only* concentrate on the shortcomings (that every country has, btw) and then painting everyone in the country with the same brush is ridiculous. And then to demonize a country for being able to have the same things as other industrialized nations but at a cheaper price is ludicrous.

This thread was made as a venting session by me one day and you are taking it way too literally. I did not say every American....alive or dead...living or ever has lived...is an idiot. But please dont take this as an apology though, because it is not. If you are so offended, why keep reading and posting? There are plenty of other threads here to post on that might be more kind to your sensibilities

To be honest? I keep posting and reading because I'm not only right, but I'm also unable to sleep before work tonight. I do read the other threads in between postings, but when I see something as ludicrous in a headline like, "Americans are Idiots" - it gets my attention.

People wanted to outlaw Larry Flynts Hustler magazine because they felt it was 'offensive'. The way I feel about that is....if it offends you, dont read it.
Youre right? no. You cannot be right....because this thread was NEVER a broad sweeping condemnation of ALL Americans therefore your conclusion about it is ultimately incorrect.

Ah yes. Charles E. Schumer. The same idiot that said 'flash-bang' grenades are not 'grenades' but 'harmless firecrackers'....even though during the hearings regarding the Massacre at Waco Tx. many expert witnesses testified that flash-bang grenades can easily blow someones head clean off if it explodes close enough.
That man has NO practical sense about anything.

Many of the expats i met were vets who love the US. But cant deal with our lack of freedoms any more. They have no intention of coming back. So trying to tax them would be a fruitless endevor.

most of those guys are on social security or gov. pension, very easy for the irs to attach the checks. the usa still wants you to pay your taxes even if you live overseas and do not use any services. if you make over a certain amount overseas you need to declare that also. that is why there has been a spike in folks giving up usa citizenship.

Yes but giving up US citizenship is not easy. Its actually very hard. Anybody saying if you dont like it leave has no idea how hard that really is.

from what i know about it, if you live overseas you still need to file your taxes yearly. so which is the bigger hassle? if your living on a fixed income in the usa, then your town and your state and federal taxes and fees go up yearly, draining your savings till what's left?
