Haahahahahaha!! John, you madman. EXACTLY the build I have contemplated for like, 20 years. You beat me to it!
I figured out a long time ago that the primary compression was way off, factory MX cylinders are already built and designed to run off THAT CASE that they come with, and already have all the goodies we want; sweeping transfer arches, widely spaced studs that only (usually bolt the base of the cylinder, H20 cooling etc etc. All the benefits already built in; Obvious answer is to cut the entire engine assy off the trans unit and graft on the CVT. Then life got busy and I never had time for that project. Good to see someone came to the same conclusion and had the time to act on it! Wonderful build. The part that gave me the creeps was always locating the output shaft from the donor MX, both up-down, front-back and more importantly left-right so that the vari would line up. I've never pressed apart a crank before; about how much pressure was required to get the webs apart? My existing press is only a 3 ton arbor so I think I'd have to invest in a 12 ton minimum. Was the crank steel hardened all the way through? Or only surface? I've used grinders on the lathe just to get through the hard surface until that layer is gone, then used some carbide tooling underneath... it still hurt to read how difficult a time you were having. Poor guys like us can't afford toolpost grinders! ...you've seen my grinder, a 4 1/2 inch hand grinder set up in a homemade jig to mount to the toolpost. Great job dude! Question though.... why is the crank backwards in the pic where you are indicating the bearing journal? You have the live center in the chuck. How is it mounted in the tailstock?
aloha, walt

Is that a FAIRING on the wheelie bar?? or a pneumatic shock absorber?

Oh! sorry, I see it's only half a crank mounted, must be between centers? Just to check bearing alignment...

Thanks! The YZ crank was surface hardened, but it was still waaay tougher than any China stuff Ive cut..My 'tool post grinder' is a Dremel tool mounted into a home made fixture..It was not used though, just shallow cuts..A stout hydraulic press is needed to work with cranks(DIY with a bottle jack?)..The long shaft pressed into the bored and reamed hole was a crap shoot as a tiny bit of error would be multiplied with the long shaft!A top tuner suggested an outer bearing attached to the CVT cover, but that never happened. It wasnt perfect, but many sessions with the brass hammer and steel wedge got the crank quite true.. Wheelie bar top tube is an old streamlined wing strut from a Piper J3 Cub..

It really helps!! Now i just need to work with tire pressure some to get wheel spin down. Its off the line much better with it! Thanks for getting me that extension so fast John

It's got TWO 49ccScoot stickers! You know damn well it's fast. lol Thanks for reppin'! Almost need another i guess? To equal engine size and all. Lol, one year at the track one of the track workers working the staging lanes said "that sure dont sound like a 49cc" Lol, he was reading the custom 49ccscoot.com stickers Jason had made for us a couple years back. I just nodded my head and said "yeah, ikr"

Nice! We have our own secret way to communicate engine size amongst ourselves now. I better send a stack for next year if John keeps dreaming stuff up.
