It does seem to be "gearing out" or running out of CVT pretty quick. Hows the belt look? A good cheaper vari many members including me have had good luck with is the Hoca.

I was trying out a stock CVT, just different springs and weights, on my 70 for something to compare the over range stuff to the last couple of days. The mild 70 could even use a little more CVT than stock. Speeds top out around 50MPH (10.13:1 gears, 130/70/12) before it's out of belt travel and left to rev to speed up. I got out early this morning to try using a spacer in hopes of pickup up off the line performance, but that really kills top speed. A 1mm spacer (smaller than the drive boss so I'm sure it's not acting as a restrictor) had me hitting the top of peak power closer to 40MPH and by 48MPH (fastest I went) it was about 500RPM past peak and not providing enough power to speed up anymore. Even with a little heavier weights than needed for good acceleration it didn't pick up speed or drop RPM at 45+. Thought this might give you more assurance that the stock CVT is not up to the task of handling a lot of speed or power.

1mm never meant so much to me until i got into scoots.

I appreciate all the info coming from u guys. So should I buy a vari or mod one? I guess it depends how much time/ money I have. I have some money saved up and I could possibly buy one. I could also buy one, which yields better results. I know all the info is here, I have read 90gtverts threads a few times over. Before buying/ building try to read up on the subject and gather opinions/info. So I guess it's time to do that for the cvt. I think I have enough power at the moment now I need to harness it. Since I know there is more power to be had easily.(hopefully)

I think you could get a new variator and mod your fixed plate. Maybe mod the TD for more travel.

Modding the stock variator is tough. The fixed half isn't bad. For the variator you may need to mod the face, but the long and hard part is going to be trying to get the ramps to work better. Much much easier and worth the money to just go with an aftermarket variator. So to be clear my thought for a good budget CVT is :
Hoca variator ($50) Modded stock fixed half ($0) Modded stock torque driver [Elongated grooves] ($0)
I would suggest having some spacers around to get the Hoca setup how you want it because to me the drive boss is too short with it.

I looked through my parts bin last night and have 3 spare varis. 2 are larger in diameter than the last. The ramps also look a bit different. Wjen I got my last scoot it came from Hawaii also came with a box full of old parts. One vari I was able to identify is a DAytona brand. I think it also says mini inside which I think is referring to "mini quad". Anyway, they look different than each other so I assume one could be performance a performance vari. So I may just need to mod the fixed half. As for the td I have one I bought for my Tao that did not end up fitting. So I am hopping it will work well/fit the mina. My neck has been jacked up for a few days so hopefully it will loosen up and let me get to work

Tha one witb the largest diameter is the Daytona brand. It looks to have the longestramps also. My current set up the belt is about 1/4 inch from outter lip. Maybe belt is too short? It is all stock so dont know how? If I have bigger vari do I need longer belt?

Might need a longer belt to use the variator. If you have the belt on the boss, where is it on the rear pulley? What is the belt size?

The stock one is about 6mm smaller diameter than the big one. As for the belt it is not on the outer edge I need to take a pic so I can get advice. I can see where the belt has been riding on the front pulley and it is a few mm from the edge. The belt is stock length yamaha. I will get measurement.
I am having a issue with head light. It is on but very dim and doesn't brighten up when revved. Its aftermarket led and it did work but dont know what happened. I beleive I am running the power out of the rectifier from the red wires. Weird, I had an led working with my other engine and it isn't working with this set up for some reason. I took off the fly wheel to replace stator and scraped a lot of dirt from inside flywheel but that didn't help. Does anyone know how many volt the rectifier should put out ? With the light hooked up it was causing the bike to not want to rev out and break up like lose electrical power at high rpm. I can only assume a power wire is grounding out from vibration at high rpm. I hate electric grimlins

In theory I would have to get a longer belt if my front pulley is larger, correct? Also, I have a hoca rear pulley, with the grooves in it. I think I am going install it, I think the diameter is a bit larger than stock. I have no idea how to disassemble the rear pully. I know how to change contra but dont know how to get those 2 pieces apart. I can tell on stock pulley belt was not all the way to edge, about 1/4 inch away. I have light weights in there now, I think 6 gram. Do I need to go heavier?

To take the pulleys apart slide the sleeve/spring seat off. May take a little work but it will slide off. Then take out the two small pins and preto. I run the hoca adjustable. Three sets of grooves. I use the least angled straight set. Be careful when you slide the sleeve off to not lose the pins.

Thanks for the info. I swear I was perplexed, then I was looking at 90verts assessment of the malossi or kit and I realizes that sleeve has to just slide off I looked everywhere for a snap ring! Thanks again!
