It won't affect top speed. Heavier rollers may give you a little more or modding the variator ramp as others have done. You could move the washer that's inside the variator to the other side of the star washer for a small mph gain. It's all stuff to try and test. Sometimes they work other times you start over. When you take the cover off next time check the gear ratio and the rollers for weight and wear. I remember reading somewhere about someone removing/changing the washer, but with the floppy wobbly belt that's on there now I doubt it'd make much of a difference. I've contemplated rollers, as the ones in there look aged. Not bad, just aged. I also get a little nauseous when I see a variator at $35 then the next stop up is $100. YIKES! I have to be careful though because I know myself when it comes to these things. I'll start with a spring and before you know it, I'll have its guts all over my driveway and I'll be calling in sick to work just so I can hand polish a piston before I put it back together and pray I don't launch the piston into the ocean from my house.

What belt is on there? Belt will normally get thinner with wear not longer. I say normally a lot because there are no absolutes with these things. Clutch springs can be a pain. Watch Brent's video so your prepared. They are a must once you start tuning for higher rpm ranges.

Watch Brent's video so your prepared. They are a must once you start tuning for higher rpm ranges. Right now it has a Bando 718.17.28, I think that's the number. It's the default number for the 1PE40QMB engine. I read the number off the belt so I ordered the same, I considered ordering a wider belt but for now I'll stick with stock. I ordered Kevlar this time though. Should be here in the next day or two. I'll wait for the springs till I'm brave and can sacrifice having it down for at least half the day. Right now my main concern is getting the new fuel lines and filter while putting the new belt on and making sure it doesn't have as much slack as the one that's on there now. That should be all this weekend I hope. Providing I get the filter by then. The line is due in Friday, the belt is coming from Miami, the filter is the last part dragging.

Partsforscooters has the filters. They're in Central Fl and ship fast. 2 days to your door. Next day if you opt for Fed Ex home delivery. If you ordered the belt from Racing Planet it's 3 days if it's in the US if not 10 plus days. It's possible the belt could of stretched on you. If you don't get it I've got one you can use until you get yours.

I wasn't in a rush since I can't touch it till the weekend at best. The next thing I was thinking of ordering would be the clutch springs (1,500 rpm) and some roller weights to replace the stock ones in there. But the fuel filter/lines and belt are a priority to get squared away so the GF has a reliable ride to work. She's not too concerned with hauling a$$ to work just yet.

Ok so I had an issue with a noise I was hearing and I'm happy to say the scoot isn't going to blow up. A big thank you to 2TDave for coming to the rescue with his experience and lending me a part. After a change in gas and the GF riding the scoot for a bit, she said it started to sound like a "chainsaw" and not so much like a weed whacker. I took a listen myself and it sounded like something was knocking around, but I couldn't tell where from? On top of that, I had issues with the fuel system. I'm happy to say both are solved right now. Well, the noise turned out to be an issue with the exhaust not being bolted on tight enough, as 2TDave had noticed. I can't consider that "Solved" entirely because now I want to upgrade the exhaust. But it doesn't sound like a chainsaw, it sounds more like a scooter now! The fuel system got an overhaul. I put in new fuel lines, filter and even a new vacuum line and fuel pump as well. I removed the oil mix line from the carb, took out the oil tank and am now running pre-mix. It's going to be a pain for now, but if you ask me it will be worth it knowing the engine is getting its oil. Now I think my next move will be looking to do some upgrades. 2TDave suggested the 70cc kit, exhaust and variator. I also need to find out my gear ratio, which I kind of remember how he told me to do it, which I can figure out later. So let the suggestions fly. I'm on a tight budget and will be doing one part at a time. I'm thinking the exhaust will be first, I know I can get it for $99 on eBay. The Variator and rollers would be next I'm thinking and the clutch/springs last. The Carb is a Mikuni original stock, which I'm told is good so I'm not changing it out but I will be ordering jets for it too. This is a big scoot so it's going to take all I can put into it to get it to move faster. If it's anything like drag cars, big parts will only make a small difference so I need to keep that in mind. On a side note, 2TDave's scoot is freaking sweet! It sounds mean and looks slick!

Glad you and Dave got it figured out.
Easy way to get a rough estimate on final drive ratio is to mark the tire and the clutch bell. Turn them slowly and see how many revolutions of the clutch bell it takes to rotate the tire one full revolution. If it takes 10 rotations of the bell to spin the tire one fill time, that's roughly a 10:1 final drive ratio. To know precisely you'd need to count the teeth on both primary and secondary gears, but you can get close enough to know if you want to swap gears out without counting teeth.
If you don't have tuning supplies it is hard to hold off on the variator. Most likely the pipe will require a roller and clutch spring swap to get the most from it so to me if you know you want a variator it's best to buy supplies that will work with it vs buying twice. The BBK may need a change in roller weight, but street/sport kits should make more low RPM power so clutch work isn't so important.

BUt yeah, I know it's all going to have to come together right, I just have to figure out what and where to start. But thanks, that's how Dave explained the gear ratio too. I won't want to go too crazy with this bike just yet, it's too big I think for me to make it a rocket like you and Dave's scooters.

You can get a Technigas Next or LeoVince TT for $150. As Brent said you'll need the variator weights and springs. I've got a source for an iron 70cc kit that's around $75 with shipping. Check your gearing. I'm guessing it's the CPI case with the 13.5:1 gears.

Send me the info on that 70cc kit when you get a chance too. As for the pipe, it may be the last thing since it's the most expensive more likely. The vari and springs would be first, esp since I'm not too thrilled on the vari that's in there and I think the rollers have seen better days. They aren't unevenly worn, but they don't have much left to them. The vari didn't look too bad when I took it apart, but still. I also was wondering about the pulley eventually.

It's not that bad- a big improvement over stock for sure- but, its also not that great... if I had to do it over again, I would probably wait to spend a little more $$- I personally would've gotten the Stage6 Pro Rep exhaust for a little less than $200- it's a badass pipe that doesn't break the bank! Once I got my BBK on, I regretted cheaping out on the pipe- possibly the single most important performance part! Myself and many here have been happy with the $50 Hoca vari from partsforscooters. Sorry can't provide a link right now from my phone... a Stage 6 BBK and pipe would make that VX50 a blast! Sent from my XT603 using Tapatalk 2

I was just looking at it myself. I'm thinking of firing off on ordering it soon, I also want to find out what shape my clutch / pulley is in too. But yeah, I've seen some pipes around $150, not sure the eBay one would be the way to go but it was a good example though. Just think, after I get all the engine crap squared away, the body is going to be next. *sigh* I have 2 scoots coming this Friday that I'm going to decide on if they will be salvaged for parts or if I'll project one of them (or both) and give this one to the GF as is. Dear god what did I get myself into. *facepalm*
