Unfortunately, inheriting someone else's wiring mayhem is pretty common with lots of used vehicles. People do some pretty wierd stuff with wires. Good luck with it.
Was your headlight working when the guy pulled out in front of you? There is a reason motorcycles always have their headlights on in the day. Even with the headlight on, it's like you're invisible sometimes.

That's one thing I didn't think of. The headlight wasn't working when I went out for a ride. You'd think they'd be able to see a bright yellow thing going down the road though I'll chalk it up to experience though. I won't ride again until the headlight issue is fixed.

From the WI motorcycle manual, When riding on a highway, headlight and taillight must be on at all times. During daylight hours, motor driven cycles may be ridden to a repair shop for replacement of a defective headlamp. Motor driven cycles may be equipped with modulating headlamps and deceleration warning lights. Avoid getting pulled over ;D I wouldn't ride anywhere without the headlight on. Sometimes you'd think we were invisible

Most people cant tell how fast your going, pull out and find out the hard way. Happens all the time. I used to date a girl that pulled out in front of a guy test riding a sport bike from a local dealership. Sent him to the hospital and totaled the bike and the car. Glad your getting all the problems ironed out.

Haven't updated this since I put it away for storage last year! I went and grabbed it out of the storage garage the other day, and proceeded to strip the whole thing down to bareness. I decided I didn't like the yellow, so I threw a coat of black on all of the main panels. The tank, rear grab bar, chain guard, exhaust pipes (not the tips, just the pipes) and radiator grill are all red.It should look pretty nice when I put it back together! Another thing I did is straighten out the handlebars! Wow, they were off. The bars were angled like you were turning a corner, while you were going straight down the road! Managed to get the tension off the shock mounts and straighten it all out. Took the front headlight/gauge cluster bracket off today, and bent it back the way it should be. Now the gauge cluster FITS where it should. It's broken apart on the back, but some "plastic weld" fixed it up for the time being. The JB weld I used last year only held up for about 10 minutes. I ordered new parts to rebuild the petcock. The rubber pieces inside were toast, and it was leaking gas all winter long. Had a full tank when I put it in storage, and only had a half tank when I brought it home. The bad part is, now I need to do ANOTHER oil change, because the gas was leaking into the oil all winter. I need to put on my new radiator, check the valves, sync the carbs, put on my new gears and chain, and attempt to get my drivers license so that I can get my motorcycle license. I'm hoping I should have all of this done by next month. That is, if I can get my license without failing. After that, I'm planning my trip I'm expecting between 60 to 80 MPG after the tune-up and gear change. With a 5.5 gallon tank, that should make for a great touring bike. It's always nice when you can go 200 miles and it only costs you $15 ;D

:needpics:
I finally get to use that!
Seriously, i hope you mixed a few red detailes in with the black as a tribute to the Triton...
Forgive my ignorance, is it a 2 or a 4? I know with 3 Kawis in the garage i should know these things...

1) We need pics.
2) Good luck with everything.
3) If you don't already have a manometer to sync the carbs, I've made one before very very cheap and easy, just like this...
You'll probably still need to buy adapters to screw into the carbs, but a yard stick and some tubing can save you a lot vs a manometer, and being so large it's very accurate.

The only pics you'd get right now is of a bunch of plastic parts, and a stripped bike I don't plan on putting the fairing back on until I get most of the work done on it. It's about 100 degrees outside in the SHADE, and very humid, so I'm not working today. As for the carb syncing, I just finished building the "bottle method" the other day. 10 feet of surgical tubing, some rubber stoppers with holes drilled in them, and 2 Snapple bottles.

Got my Class-M permit yesterday ;D I may not even bother getting the full license for the trip. The permit allows me to drive unlimited during daylight hours on my own, so long as I wear a helmet (Which I always do) And seeing I don't have insurance, I wouldnt be allowed to take the skills tests. My only option would be to take a riders course, which is $340. The permit is good for 6 months.

How long do you have to hold the permit before allowed to get the license?

I used to just go get my permit every summer here in IN. Its soo much cheaper if you only ride a few months a year and your bike is for sale....In my case anyway..lol. Congrats on that!!!!

Make sure your permit is good in other states before your trip. I was planing to just do the permit thing, but it can be limiting with travel.
How's that paint job coming?

They limit the permit here now in WI to 3 times. That was why 1/3 of the guys in my course were old Harley guys. At the time in 'o5 it only cost me $109. They were booked for 4 months in advance. By the next summer the price was double.

Right, I didn't think of that. I'll have to check and make sure. The paint job is total rubbish, but I'm not exactly a paint specialist I just wanted it to be black and red. Didn't necessarily want it to look perfect.
