Alrighty then, ive been mentioning this swap for a while now, and figured its time to start the build thread since i will have all the parts i need by this wensday.
My scooter is a Longjia LJ50QT-K, but where im at in NB Canada, its labeled a 2010 Daymak Niagara. it is powered by a 1PE40QMB minarelli clone.
now most people that ive seen on this forum usually go with the 70cc BBK, expansion chamber performance pipe. but i decided to go a different route!
And here it is.
It is a 157QMJ Short Case 150cc GY6 engine that i got from a friend for $150. that included the wiring harness, exhaust, carb and intake. It srated life as a powerplant for a single seater dune buggy, so it also came with the reverse gearbox as well.
when i got the engine it needed some parts to convert it over to a scooter engine, mainly the final drive axle. the one that was in it was way too long for what i wanted, which was to have that stock look of the 1pe40qmb engine. so i had to order a new short drive axle from a website that i found that is based here in canada. it also needed a Brake shoes stay pin, brake shoe cam and arm, brake shoes and a rear rim. since i wanted to keep the stock look i opted to go with a 12" rear rim for the gy6, but since i could find one that had the same shape as the ones i have, i had to go with one of these.
but the one i ordered is red.
now, since i went with the 12" rim for my swap, i needed a tire for. i did some measuring and found out that the 130/70-12 rear tire that is one the 2 stroke engine would not fit, i needed a new one, so i found a Kenda 100/60-12 from the website i have bought all the parts that i have ordered before. which is www.scoot-tuning.com. they have a great selection of parts, their prices are competitive with scrappy dog, and it canada based, which is perfect for me.
back to the tire, since i had to go with a smaller tire, i know that the scooter will ride completely different. but its a sacrifice i had to make if i wanted the gy6.
so now that i have the engine, and all the parts i need, i have to get started on the actual swap. the only thing that i have started on the swap other the prepping the engine, is the exhaust. now since the exhaust that came with the engine was ment for a dune buggy, and it didnt matter if the pipe was in the way, i decided to chop off most of the pipe and the muffler itself, and i welded on a can muffler that can be found on the briggs & stratton engines, and it only cost me $12 with taxes.
its not pretty at this point in time as i didnt clean up my welds as i have no grinding discs. it is also not completed yet since i need to fabricate a mounting bracket for it to mount to the engine.
this is it for now, since i have to wait for the stock gy6 engine hanger to arrive, which will be here by wensday at the latest. and once that is here, i can continue with the rest of the swap.
on another note, i may have to buy a new engine hanger for the 2 stroke, as i am not 100% sure that i can configure the gy6 mount to work with my frame, and also keep the frame useable for the 2 stroke if i ever decide to switch back. i did happen to find this picture on a zuma forum of a guy swapping the gy6 into a yamaha zuma. heres a pic of the engine mount welded to the stock zuma mount.
i may have to go this route. we will see later.
