as I stated it's slooooow. It takes off fine but i can't seem to get it over 18mph maybe 20 after a long stretch. were these restricted back in '08? My tao tao wasn't restricted. Some 2 strokes were but I heard the 4 strokes aren't, but I could be wrong. maybe I just need to tune the carb. Idunno. I will say this much, the engine is smoother and quieter than my old engine

I am running an 08 and I have no restrictions that I know of. I just hit 40 mph on the gps 2 days ago. Get the carb. as tuned as you can and be sure to upjet if you modify the intake or exhaust...then tune the variator and make sure the belt is the right size and in good shape. Check your valve lash and set that dead on before you tune the carb. I would also change the oil run it a bit, and then change it again as it is so cheap to do and who knows when it has been done prior to you owning it?
That's all I can think of at the moment...other guys here can help you more I think. Nice job on the engine swap. I, thankfully, have never had to do that...yet.

I have a pod filter on it now but I wonder if the stock air box will help. I think I have a 79 jet in there now. Could I be lean? Would that mess with my power? I have an 81 jet from when I had my bbk but I think that would be too rich. I'll check the valves tomorrow

I run a pod on a 20mm with a 90, tried a stock air box for giggles, ran like crap, couldn't get the carburetor set right, really think it was too restrictive for my setup at that point.

I love stock airbox. Easy to tune. I had 50mm cyl and 47mm org head (16,5mm org carb, #85 mainjet). Worked like a dream (Variator was org).

I took off my carb and there is gas inside my float. I wonder if that's the problem.

Yes, that is definitely a problem. The floats don't float fully if there's any gas in them. That will make the floats sag lower, the fuel level will then be too high causing a rich mixture.
That could be why your top speed is so slow. One possibility.

I took off my carb and there is gas inside my float. I wonder if that's the problem. Gas inside the float will, of course, keep it from floating. It if can't float, it can't shut off the flow of gas to the carb. when that flow is not needed..idle, going slow, starting...etc. Probably a pinhole in it somewhere which might be able to be repaired, or, a new float can't be too much I wouldn't think or, do like I did, about a year ago I bought a new carb that came with an 85 jet installed and an extra 90 jet and a larger primary jet all for like $25 shipped! heh, I remember my dad soldering pinholes in brass floats... Yes, that would seal them up properly. I think our floats now in these scoots are plastic, and, you could seal them but, I would not mess with it and just get a new carb. If it is old enough that the plastic float is sinking, or, if it was new and so poorly made it was doing this, then I want a new one for $25.00. Bill

Newer carb but, you know....still chineese. The carb on my donor bike is possibly from a kymco. It's logo is on it. But a carb is a carb isn't it?
