Don’t tear down yet. Pull off the variator and start up. Tick still there?
That hitch is may just be the flywheel magnets.

Might be a bad crank bearing. not good. I was thinking I may have installed the old bad crankshaft assembly... but I checked and the bad one is still on the work bench with the old parts. Could a new bearing be junk out of the box?

Are you at TDC when that valve opens ? almost sounds like its hitting the piston

Are you at TDC when that valve opens ? almost sounds like its hitting the piston Yeah I am pretty sure it is TDC. It clicks as the line on the chain sprocket crosses the index mark.

So I tore down the top and repositioned the cam...I think.
The cam lobes were pointing towards cylinder side. T mark on the flywheel was aligned as well as the stopper plate and sprocket markings.
I have no idea what I'm doing wrong here...

It doesn't sound like main bearings, it sounds like rod bearing since when they spin out , the rod starts having movement up and down and it make this noise. Drain your oil if there is glitter in its bearings 100 percent
