MD just said that, effective at 8PM today, we are under an order to stay home aside from essentials. I did LOL when he said it's punishable by $5,000 or 1 year imprisonment. I imagined me, all alone on my scooter coming in contact with no one... being stuck in jail surrounded by people in order to stop the spread of the virus.
There seem to be so many ifs and buts and oddities in this whole thing. So, the governor said it's fine to go for walks and be in parks as long as there's not a crowd. Presumably a bicycle ride is fine. So technically scooters/mopeds in MD operate under a lot of the same laws as a bicycle. Does that mean that I can ride wherever I please as long as it's not crowded or does that mean that I could face a crime because they'll consider it a motor vehicle and non-essential travel?
The whole thing confuses me. Construction is still considered essential. A hospital, many manufacturing plants, fixing a leak... I get that. Is it essential to finish a breakfast nook for the Jones'? No, but it's fine by law. One friend does telecommunications and such and basically says it's his call if he wants to do a job. So some dude can go into the house a a healthcare worker with a family of 5 that has been in who knows which crowded stores and build a new bookcase for them, or my friend can install a phone system for any that he chooses and that's all fine, but it's not legal for me to ride the scooter alone to nowhere.
This is not a rant or complaint. I tend to be a detail oriented person and go a little nuts if I can't wrap my head around things. I understand that it's really hard to make something comprehensive because there is so much grey area in real life. Just odd how some high risk things are potentially essential, and unless I have a pack of TP onboard my scooter riding is now illegal... unless it's close enough to a bicycle. I know. Just shut up and stay home... and don't forget to report for jury duty. At least I'll have plenty of stuff to think about. lol

Our (PA) stay at home order has been extended to April 30, schools and non-essential businesses are closed indefinitely. All the grocery stores and Lowe’s also have a cough/sneeze guards at the register. Most stuff is closing by 6-8 pm. So your supposed to stay at home but can go out to exercise, I haven’t seen more people out and about in years. Parking lots at the parks are crowded. I even saw an elderly couple on their electric scooters doing laps in the park. I’m down to 4 work days a week because we are going through residential accounts too quick, commercial accounts are out of the question.
I only saw getting a disorderly person charge if you are out.

In the U.K. People are starting to get fined now. If you are on the road. You need a reason. Still a lot of people ignoring this though. I have a letter issued from my work. It's to show the police if I get stopped.
I went shopping today. First time for a week. Waiting in line to get into shops is now a thing.

Based on my studies I would expect this virus to be around a long time, maybe even years. Life for people has changed on the earth. The home made protective gear etc will make us look more like the sand people in Star Wars.

It looks like everyone in my area is essential or has essential things to do. I've seen the videos of baron streets elsewhere so I really thought that traffic past my house on a main road would decrease dramatically today after the stay at home order, but it hasn't. There's less, but not a lot less. I was out in the garage working on the scooter watching traffic and neighbors coming and going, thinking I must be the only useless mofo with nowhere to go. I guess I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and assume a lot of people are heading to get groceries today and that surely the road won't be busy tomorrow.

Even if this stuff is killing old and useless people like myself and young people survive, the young will find their lungs scarred and susceptible to death from the next flu or cold virus or pneumonia etc. People and the historians forget that it is not that mortality rate (number of deaths) that is the real damage figure. It is the number of people maimed or damaged by the disease that are the true indicators of how bad it is.
I lived through one plague, measles before the vaccine, but the damage it did to me has made me wish I had died at the time. I remember all sorts of maimed little kids running around afterward. Look up all the side effects of measles.
Our government and others around the world really screwed the pooch this time. They only remembered the recent diseases we HAVE been able to contain like SARS and EBOLA etc. They forgot how easy it is for a disease to spread and forgot to shut down the airlines and transportation systems. Quarantine is our only line of defense with a new disease. I am afraid to have to say it but many people are really stupid, and when our leaders are stupid also disaster strikes. It seems many people did not pay attention during basic biology classes or didn't even have biology. It has been common knowledge among biologists and medical people, during my lifetime at least, that our population was rising to the danger point and our transport systems were aggravating the possibility of a disease spreading. It was only a matter of time until a plague happened. We were and are coming up on any one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse riding the Earth. In fact with other recent events it seems they all are.

Just seen in the news. Over 1,100 deaths in the U.S. In one day, from the virus. Scary statistics. Be safe people.
