I had cover off of CVT today. Variator is definitely not using its full travel. Rear pulley belt is in the outter rim when at idle. Front was riding the boss. I moved the shim from inside the variator to outside and picked up 3+mph. Feels like that’s as fast as it might want to go? Dunno yet. Still playing, learning, riding. The riding is the most important part. The learning and tinkering is bonus material. I gotta get my micrometer out (wherever that is) and measure the weights. Also buy a Gumby scale at Harbor Fright to weigh them. It shifts too early in the process to be efficient at acceleration. Bogs mightily from high 20’s to 40. I keep saying I’ll do it but saying it doesn’t make it happen.

I guess I’ll oil up my gas while I’m at it.

I guess I’ll oil up my gas while I’m at it. It really sucks if you forget to!

I’m on a strict premix regime now.

Ok so now I’ve measured and weighed the weights in the variator. 15x12 and weights are 3.9 and 3.8 grams.
Weigh all 6 and divide by 6 I get 23.4g and 3.9g each
Damn. They’re light. I’m used to seeing weights in the 4,5,6,7 range but like even Brent is running weights a bit heavier I believe. Doubt I can go much lower. Guess I’ll be looking at driven pulley spring alternatives.

Weights might be too light to get full travel, and you are missing a lot..Is that a 788 belt?Something is restricting full travel(short belt, stiff TD spring, light weights, junk variator)... 927 is my top pick for race premix, synthetic castor(say what?)..

What revs are you getting at top speed?

I believe this belt is a 792? I may have to go up a bit more. I had a slightly smaller belt on it when I bought it used. I’d have to refer to my earlier page 1 pictures. My rpms drop into the “bog” zone of 6-8k when I hit 30mph and hang out there until I get to 40-43mph. Once they climb into 8k it feels good. Tops out around 10,5k and 59 mph was my peak with the small shim outside the variator rather than inside. Inside my max speed was 53 but my bog rpm was a little lower. Takes off nicely but around 30 dies.

I bought that 798 belt years ago, thinking I had found a sort of OR belt vs the standard Bando 788 17 28. Turns out, it's shorter than the 788. If you have a 788 around, check it.
Midrange RPM issues like that are pretty common with a dual angle torque driver.

Might get a tiny bit more with slightly heavier weights. Have you checked the variator to see how far it can close without the belt? Can't remember what variator you have. Was it the evo one?
