49ccscoot.proboards.com/post/49602/threadI believe this is the variator I received. Or at least one of its cousins. I did not remove the starter boss but removed the small gear set above the crank and also the internal starter clutch and bearing. I then added these three large USS washers to shim out and make the rear of the ramp plate not rub and also makes the belt track fairly straight. I added the machine bushing I bought above in the inside of the variator between the drive boss and the ramp plate. Yes, inside the thing as a spacer. This allows for the belt to drop all the way into the center. The ramp plate indeed does still move out all the way without contacting the larger OD machine bushing. As you and others found the supplied 3.5-3.8g weights are crazy light. I stuffed foil into the 3.8 set of weights and it did indeed help but only barely. Top speed at 12k is 40mph. Acceleration is not great. It just flat out needs heavier weights.

Experimentation time Ace hardware sells 3/8” aluminum rod which is 9.8mm in diameter. The inside diameter of the Malossi 3.5G 19x15.5 weights is 10mm. A little five minute epoxy later and I have some heavier weights. Now I can work from heavy back to light. How much do they weigh? No freakin clue. My X borrowed my little scale three months ago for pinewood derby cars.

If you happen to pass a Harbor Freight while you're out, they sell the little scales for $10-15.

At launch it takes off up to nine grand and stays there. Top speed is 52 miles an hour at 10+ thousand RPM. I need to weigh these weights and then get a set of tuning weights above and below this weight.

I once bought a used variator kit, someone had done the same thing... with gasket maker, the inside of the rollers were full of it lol

So this is the machine bushing I added to the drive boss stack inside the variator. It’s too large of an OD to fit into the grove of the variator and I need the thickness so I can tighten the variator and not hit the spline. With the bushing outside the variator with the kick start gear the belt would not reach the drive boss. I wondered if I could move it somewhere else. By laying it on top of the ramp plate inside the variator Then pinching it between the drive boss and the ramp plate it adds enough width for the belt to drop all the way down. I did also check to make sure the ramp plate can reach all the way to the bottom of travel without contacting the larger OD of the bushing and it does. It’s a little tricky to assemble like this but it’s not something I’ll do every day.

You could use kitchen scales to get a rough idea of the weight. It would only weigh to the nearest gram. But by placing all six on there, it would be close enough.
