That's right. You are going to be buying a jet pack to get it sorted I think. Yup, jets, needles, slides and patience. There are no shortcuts.

I do have a CHT gauge coming this week. No more random guessing and hoping the temps aren’t volcanic.

Battery is a coin battery, display is on all the time. Backlight is lit only during external power input and powered by external. Does voltage too.

Be wary of the cheap CHT, I had a Runleader. After a few months it started giving me wonky readings (ie it'd read 270*F after the bike had been idling a few minutes, or i'd be going down the road and it start read 70*F intermittently after riding for extended periods, and what made me finally toss it was I never saw temps over 300*F put on a trailtech to find out I was getting up to 400*F after WOT runs) Lesson I learned was a CHT is too important to go cheap on. Just my I’ll be wary of weird readings. I did see in the documents that a NTC sensor only goes to 302°F but the PT100 will read to 572°F I wonder if there is a way to know which one you had or I have? I know the sensor type is switchable. I’m 5 minutes from a test ride.

PT100 sounds familiar. The only writing on it besides Runleader on the circuit board underneath the battery is W20-B10518000164 which is probably just a lot #. As I was messing around with it it did start reading 469.5*F, so i'd think it is the one supposed to read up to 572*F

I just returned. Highest reading I got was 160°F while riding and it goes up to 185°F after shutdown. Granted it is 40° here today but I’d assume the damn thing should get hotter than that. I think I’ve been bamboozled.
Feels like it’s still running rich though. Won’t come up on full chat. I think after lunch here I’m gonna make some alterations.

I’ve tinkered some more. Needle clip to leanest setting (1?) 78 jet in main, Cylindrical pod filter robbed off of the Aprilia PHBG carb. Stock air box is off now. Highest temp I saw while riding was 250°F which still seems low. I’m gonna try and borrow a non contact thermometer from across the street and see if it remotely agrees with it. Not today though. I was able to hit 53 mph and I can cruise at 50mph with relative ease. Everywhere I went seemed like a headwind. It’s 41° out right now with snow on the way tonight and tomorrow. Yay. I was able to put about 20 miles on buzzing around. Runs pretty good. I’m happy with where it’s at as far as drivability. I have stiffer clutch springs in the mail and I’m thinking I need to weigh my variator weights and head lighter. Revs drop from 9k cruising to below 7k on hills before it’ll “upshift” and gain rpm back. Lighter weights should raise rpm and allow shift a little sooner when bogging in hills. I know contra spring is involved in all that as well but I’m making baby steps.

The readings do sound low. If it is low but consistent, IMO you can work with that. It's pretty common for people to ask what their CHT should be. I never like to give a number for that, because CHT gauge setups can vary quite a bit and it also makes a difference AC vs LC and how the shrouds and fins are. Too many variables. If you shot for 300-350F on your gauge, you may end up with soft seizing or worse... while that would be OK for some.
My best advice is to monitor the CHT gauge, but try to tune without it the first time. I know. We tell people they need a CHT and now I'm saying don't use it right now. WTH? Until you know how it reads, it's not an effective tuning tool IMO. You can certainly see temps go up and down with lean and rich conditions as long as it's consistent, but there is no numerical target to aim for ATM. Once you get it figured out, it will be a good tool though. It's also very good for part throttle stuff. Part throttle is tough to tune, but if you start seeing hot spots on the CHT it can tell you a lot.
If you really want to know if your sensor can read above 302F, you could remove it and use a heat gun to find out. It may not matter though, based on what you've seen so far. Another 50 degrees on that gauge setup may be melting stuff. I'd just watch it for now. If it starts maxing out at 302, then I guess it's time to find the other sensor.

You could check 'calibration' by putting the sensor in boiling water as it cant get more than 212 degrees...

Went for another ride today. Cruising around. Definitely have to get the variator weights sorted and the contra spring too. From 30-40 it cruises just fine on flat roads but throw in a hill and the rpms dip into the high 6’s to low 7’s and the power eeks away. Get her up to 45 though and it hits the 8-9k area and it zips along quite nicely. 45-50mph cruising is effortless and feels quite stable. WOT on flat ground yields 53mph knocking on 10k. That’s the wall. Won’t go a bit faster. I need to get out with the Black Box app running and do some documented time trips. I did fiddle with the rolling diameter on the speedo until it agreed with gps at 35mph to +/- 1mph so I trust the dash fairly well.
Feels good to get out and stretch my legs.
