Got the carb installed today. Currently running 95 main, stock pilot, needle middle slot, 2 turns air screw. Still getting too hot. Started with 88, then 92, 95 now. It’s getting better but I can only hold it wide open for around .25 mile & it’ll hit 350. It drops pretty fast when I let off. Should I just keep going bigger or does it say something else is going on? I think I could have had a slight leak around the elbow that goes into the air box so I siliconed it up but won’t know until tomorrow if it doesn’t rain. It does seem a little more responsive & like it might pull a little harder.

That doesnt sound healthy with that big of jet
Check for Air Leaks With the scooter running I like to run a unlit propane torch along the seams of the carb and intakes and listen for rpm speed changes . Others like to use starter fluid /carb cleaner instead of a unlit torch

Exhaust leaks is the second check Check for exhaust leaks by taking a wet rag with a gloved hand with the scooter running . If the scooter kills quick you are good if it keeps running then your exhaust gasket or your silencer has a leak .
The exhaust gasket is a problem the silencer is not . Just like checking a leaky bike tire use soapy water in a spray bottle and spray the seams around silencer and atand see if you have a leak

How large is the opening on your airbox? When running a 17.5mm carb it would be best if the opening was 18-19mm. You can use a 90 degree pvc elbow or something similar that is the required diameter. With that setup I believe you should not need to use a jet larger than 88.

It’s just the stock box with the snorkel removed. I’ll do the propane test & look for an air leak.

No luck on finding a leak. I’ve tried the torch all over with no change.

Well I found my issue. I have a stage 6 jet kit. Their #’s are like mikuni not dellorto. So the 95 I was running was more like an 83. I put in the 100 & it’s way better. That is roughly an 86.5 dell. Wide open for long periods of time it would slowly creep up towards 350 & I managed to hit 355 going up a big hill. I have a 102 which is an 88 so that should put me just about right.

Do the numbers have any value outside of an arbitrary numbering system? .080 inch, mm, hairs?

What do I need to do to swap in 08+ secondary gears. I’d like to get a little closer to the magic 11:1 without going to straight cuts due to noise.

Just buy the 2008 from your local dealer or from partzilla or bike bandit. They are on Backorder
12 to 1 all the way down to 10 to 1 with the higher power set ups . I would not expect a big Increase going from 12 to 1 11 to 1 . Maybe 2 miles more up top Aeroxes stock run 12 to 1 with 50 cc and hit 50 mph
Straight cut gears sound kinda like a turbo until they wear in I dont really notice them anymore after a 1000 miles . You could upgrade your variator for better shifting and higher gear ratio.

A different vario (top performance or polini hi speed) would give him a max of 8km/h (4,9mph) more top speed. Straight cut gears are not that bad at all if you put in a thick gear oil. I have tested out various oils to try and keep the noise down and have found gear oil for tractor gear transmissions works the best. I believe it is sae 140 oil. With that oil the gearbox is no louder than stock.

Do you only get those gains going over range? Do you gain anything worthwhile just replacing the variator? I figured the secondaries were probably worth 2mph.

We are talking about Non Overrange variators . The Stock Variators are 93 mm and the Sport are 95-97 mm The Overarrange are over 99 mm .
Like I tell my wife its not all about the size to make the magic happen .
The variator upgrades also have better ramp angles to give better shifting and acceleration
I have used both polini and malossi variators They both added similar top speed when dialed in.
