Well, I've been mentioning this project in my introduction thread, but figured this little bike deserves its own thread here. When I picked this bike up, it had been completely neglected. Disintegrated fuel lines, completely dead battery, never (ever!) had an oil change, bent handlebars, broken turn signals, etc., etc. This was a squids scooter, complete with "Gixxer" stickers. Poor thing. I'm filming much of the process of restoring this scooter. I have footage of removing and cleaning the carb, etc., etc. While I sort through that, I went ahead and put together a "before and after" of how the bike came versus how it's running after we cleaned it up a bit. It's amazing what a little carb clean-air filter clean-spark plug clean-new battery-oil change can do for a bike! It's a miracle! He lives! And for reference, here's the original walkaround video:

This reminds me of another good point of that style of engines... the kickstarts are reliable. At least for myself and friends they were. I've had a lot of issues over the years with CVT scoot kick start setups, but I can't remember one on any of my bikes or friends bikes with those motors. It's something you take for granted till you own a setup that gives you trouble. Beefy lever and a much different design, more like a traditional motorcycle.
Glad to see it fired up!

Everything is going great! Got the handlebars installed, bar-end mirrors. Looks fantastic! Also, removed all the "Gixxer" stickers. LOL
Only one trouble remains: the shift mechanism. The clutch itself is great. No slipping, shifts strong. BUT... there is waaay too much slack in the shift lever itself. Also, it's a suicide shift of the heel-toe variety. If moto GP was on old cruisers, they would have this set up, minus all the slack.
Tried adjusting shift shaft and the lever/peg themselves. No avail. Video uploading soon. Will post later tonight. Thoughts in the mean time? Ideas?

OH, and PS--- It's a totally different ride with all the clean up work we did. Holy crap. It's actually peppy. Got a couple mini wheelies when shifting to 2nd gear. LOL Nothing like basic maintenance to bring a ride back from the dead. Didn't get the wheelie on cam. It was an accidental one, very small, and it was dark outside.

I hated the "dual shifter" on mine. Swapped to just a single shifter and use your toe on either side as a real bike and it never bothered me since. Also, some of those use a linkage instead of being mounted directly to the shaft and a lot of those Chinese linkages are junk and bend and get out of whack.

On this, the footpeg and dual shifter is all one piece. I wish I was joking. I would love to swap it for a single and just get used to GP-style shifting, but... How to salvage the footpeg? Also, this is why you can't tighten the footpeg on completely. It rotates as one unit with the shift lever! If you tighten the peg on all the way, you can't rotate the shift lever. The whole situation makes me think "in French," if you follow. However, considering this is the first true "headache" I've had with this seriously neglected machine, I have no complaints. It wouldn't be much of an epic restoration story if there weren't a few hiccups! Still... I should get a bell for this bike, stat.

Kinda hard to say without really looking at it. Pics of the area may help. Perhaps a different footpeg would be needed. There should be threaded holes on the bottom of that engine. They were used for a plate and kickstand setup on the midbikes, and I believe some pitbikes have a footpeg setup that bolts on there. Gotta be some way to do it.

Other than this lil bull shift it seems to coming alone well. Cool little bike. Im sure you will get it figured out. That thing has got to be already thanking you for getting it away from the PO.?.

It looks like sloppy linkage with a verrry short toe shifter.Might need to get some quality parts from Honda,Kaw,or Yam sport bike(they all use the same shifter splines) and adapt it to your new ride..Just extending the toe shifter so you can get your boot under it would help,but the travel would get real long then..

The lever itself is actually quite long. I cannot reach it to press down (upshift) without putting my foot quite off the peg. The heel is *definitely* too far away. Darn small feet. *grumpy face* OH! So, at work today I remembered there was on old Snap-On mini trail bike in the back warehouse. I snuck over a quick glance at it while getting something from the warehouse. Guess what?? Same. Exact. Shift setup. Same stupid heel/toe shifter as my BadBoy. What a horrid, horrid design idea. I'm going to give it a chance to grow on me, but dang. I didn't realize such a bad idea had been around for so long. But, at least I know I can use old Snap On parts for my scooter tranny if need be. LOL This is what the Snap On mini bike looks like, but with many more layers of dust and neglect:

Generally (though not religiously), I'm like the anti-squid. LOL *looks down at her Tour Master boots* Since I have no car, "all that money I save on gas" generally goes into gear/maintenance/upgrades/track days. I have 3 pairs of boots. To be fair, one pair is essentially destroyed and useless. It *is* possible to wear out a pair of Alpinestars, apparently. It just takes 2 winters (road salt, snow, and all), a crash, some offroad misadventures, track days, and about 30,000 miles. You can probably smell them from where you sit. I can't bring myself to throw them away, as they have been through so much with me. I even used to get teased on my scooter for wearing so much gear, even by the cops. Proof (filmed with a helmet potato): In that video I was in full gear, minus boots (I didn't get boots until I bought my first motorcycle): jacket, overpants, gloves, helmet. ...and sneakers. LOL
