Yeah. They're steel. I don't think I'll really need them, but they came with the kit and maybe where they come down I can make sparks without tearing up the pegs. Something to amuse me if I'm cruising around a desolate town late at night.
I've had pegs on here for a while now in one form or another. I have to say to anyone that's tall/has long legs, this mod makes riding the tiny scoot feel totally different. Way more room than any big scoot I've ever rode in stock form. No more knees in the handlebars. Aside from being able to stretch out a lot more, you have more places to put your feet so you can move around and stay comfortable easier on long rides.

I took the TaoTao out last night to see how it's doing with cruise speed/RPM and fuel economy. Hoping to get an update vid together if I can find out if it'll stay consistent. It ran well on the ~10 miles to town. Ran well around town for about 7 miles. I was heading back through town to get on the road toward home again and the engine died while coasting to a stop sign at about midnight. Just quit when the revs dropped. Refused to start. I didn't have tools on me but I could see there was fuel in the lines, everything was still connected in the ignition system, I could see RPM on the tach and mine's hardwired into the coil wire so I should at least have a signal to the coil for spark, and it appeared to have compression from the way it cranked. The cap on the plug wire felt a little loose on the plug to me, but that may have just been paranoia trying to find an issue. I'll check it over later and hopefully find out what's up.
This is the first time the TaoTao has left me stranded in the 2 years that I've had it on the road for anything other than a tire issue.
One bit of good news is that the replacement thermocouple seems to have fixed my CHT issues. It stayed on the whole time and didn't do anything funky.

thats strange
I hate when a scoot just quits out of nowhere!
when my kit seized and wouldn't start up again it appeared to have good compression from the way it cranked and putting my finger over the spark plug hole I could feel a lot of compression, but it still didn't want to start at all.

I checked with the spark plug and the spark looked okay... not great. I checked with an HEI tester so it has to jump a larger gap and the spark was very inconsistent at best and sometimes it wouldn't make a spark at all. I've got 60+VAC from the red/black CDI charging wire. ~0.12VAC from the pickup wire. I'd like to see 0.3V at a minimum, and hopefully closer to 0.5VAC. I know that in the past I have checked and had at least 0.3-0.4VAC there. I pulled off the shroud and moved the pickup from an 0.025" gap to 0.010" gap to the reluctor. It went up to ~0.15VAC and still barely sparking with the HEI tester. I may just replace the pickup instead of the whole stator since I've had no issue with charging and I've got good power headed out to the CDI from it.

Sometimes I hate electrical parts....
My old pickup coil was showing ~0.15VAC when cranking. I look for 0.3VAC or more. I decided it should be replaced. I've been meaning to do a vid about checking the output there and from the exciter coil for quite some time. I decided to do that today. Since I was showing my checks with voltage, I figured I'd show the resistance checks as well. The old pickup coil was around 158 ohms. This passes all specs that I found in a few different service manuals.
I replaced the pickup. I got a consistent spark and the scooter started. Then I checked the values just to see where I was at. I got ~1.5VAC and 147 ohms. The ohm value would pass every manual spec I looked at.
One manual says 140-200, one says 80-160, and one says 40-300 ohms, so both coils are good by any of their specs.
I shoot for at least 0.3VAC and both coils are putting out ~0.15VAC, so both coils fail my usual method.
Both pickups test essentially the same, yet one barely sparks with an HEI tester and the other makes a consistent spark. One won't start the scoot and the other will.
I shot some stuff so maybe I can get a vid up about replacing the pickup coil in case that's of any use so I installed it all and buttoned it up and it starts... but I have to take it back apart and modify the pickup so I can get the advance back like my old modded pickup because I didn't want that part in the replacement vid.

I modified the new pickup today so I could advance it as it was with the old one. Had a bit of a brain fart when I started and modified one side of the pickup the wrong way. No worries though, I did the other side the right way so it could still be returned to stock timing easily enough, not that I plan to. I had to use an allen head bolt on one side in order to tighten it because the replacement pickup is more squared off than the old one. I set the gap at 0.015" and checked the voltage one last time before putting the fan shroud back on. Now it's peaking at around 0.25VAC.

Thank you. Not exactly sure. I've gotta get together over a year's worth of stuff and figure out how to organize it and I have to get this thing to a point that it's somewhere near where it was and consistent. I think I'm close to the last part. The ride when I broke down was intended to be a test ride to see what mileage and performance was like and I had done some 0-30s after carb and CVT adjustments made recently. Just did more 0-30s this morning because of the pickup coil replacement. Need to get a test ride in. If it looks OK I'll do more 0-30s to see if it remains stable and prob another test ride. If not I guess I'll be tuning and testing more. Windy and humid weather have stretched the process out recently too. This would be easier if I cared less about accuracy. lol
At any rate, I haven't intended to take this long for updates. Even once I get everything together, it will take a lot of video editing. I am making an effort, just need some things to cooperate and many hours of going over stuff, organizing, and editing. I assure you it's not forgotten and I am making an effort. This is for basically just an update of what's been going on BTW. After all of that I'll need to start working with whatever the next mods are for another update which I certainly hope happens in a much smaller timeframe.

Yeah I understand consistency is important! But really keep up the good work man your videos are pretty darn good/professional if you ask me. I'm sure editing all that video will be a rough!
