For multiple reasons, mainly gas money, I purchased a used moped on craigslist. It's a 49 cc "peace sports" mostly good condition cosmetically and great running condition. It had just under 1500 miles when I got it and I have put about 50 miles on it this weekend just cruising around. I paid $320 for it on Friday night, it was listed for $375. So far I am loving it, hoping to use it for my daily commute to and from work.
I can get it barely past 35mph on level ground. I would like to somehow get it up to 40-45 without sinking a whole lot more money into it. I just got done fogging it with seafoam which doesn't seem to have done a whole lot of good, but nothing bad happened so oh well. I am moderately skilled at working with a wrench, but don't have a very good set of tools at my disposal currently. It also seems to have a slight oil leak. A few drops wind up on the ground whereever I park it, but it stops shortly after parking.
I am looking into getting a decent helmet, but apparently I have a very large head. I suppose all my brains have to be somewhere. I would prefer something that isn't super heavy and thick. Maybe just barely a step up from a skateboard helmet. Something that doesn't make me look like I'm trying to pose as a full on motorcyclist and not too bulky or uncomfortable. There's no helmet requirement for scooters under 51 ccs here in Las Vegas Nevada. So it doesn't have to be DOT approved. But I do need something, just doesn't feel right without any headgear, especially since I wear a hardhat all day at work.
Any info, suggestions or opinions will be warmly welcomed and greatly appreciated. Thanks.

WELCOME!!!!!!! Sounds like u need a big bore kit, and a roller weight set. Tgese little things are fin, but very addictive. Like crack on wheels. You are in the right place, a lot of great people here. Someone who knows more about your peace sports will chime in with more info shortly.

Dont skimp on saftey gear! & 35 mph is about max, unless you play the gearing game or go big bore. Etc.

I think just being able to keep up with traffic would be nice. It's still great for now. I can drive my van if anything goes wrong, but it gets maybe 8mpg city, hence the scooter.
What do you think the out of pocket costs would be just to get this thing to top out at 45 on flat ground? I'm not afraid to go all out if necessary. I'd rather upgrade the 49cc scooter than purchase a stock higher cc because the 49cc scooters are easier on the legal stuff. I do a lot of traveling and I don't want to have to go through transferring plates and insurance on another vehicle when I switch states again (as I do on a regular basis). Plus if I'm going to go through all that I'd rather just pick up a straight up street bike.

Two maybe 3 hundred depending on what you do. USMCDoc on here sells quality kits and can provide more info. I have a 2t so that's where most of my knowledge is. Check out the 4t tech area. I've got a good deal of $ in parts but it isn't necessary. Then again 70 mph on a scooter isn't either.

::welcome:: A 47mm big bore kit along with a jet kit and a selection of roller weights is where I'd start. If you pay a shop it may cost $200-300, but you should be able to get the parts and DIY for a good bit less. 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/350/big-bore-kit-installationGo to a motorcycle or scooter shop and check out their helmets. Try them on before buying so you get the right fit.

So I didn't drive it to work this morning, just not enough time to make it to work on time without taking the van on the freeway. But after work I drove the scoot around to cash a check and run some errands. I got it up to 45mph on a slight downhill, very slight. Also I realized that the odometer is actually in kilometers. So, this scoot actually has less than a thousand miles on it.
I noticed that sometimes, especially when pulling full throttle from a complete stop, the motor likes to rev up and down, almost enough to make me rock back and forth from the g-forces going up and down. I did a google search and it says this can be caused by an air leak in the filter box. I checked it and tightened everything down and it didn't make any difference. Any suggestions?

The main jet could be too small. Sometimes they're lean stock or it could be that someone modified the airbox by removing the restriction inside and that leaned it out. In the link below you can see the airbox modification I'm talking about and a tuning process. www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5j8gHg5kMc

Everything on it looks stock. What's the cost to rejet it?

About $5 a jet or you can get a kit with 10 of them from PFS for roughly $15.
