Credit Card Tuners...I like that

If you are willing to do some work(unlike credit card tuners..) the KX65 0r RM65 reed drops in a Mina, different bolt pattern, but could be filed/drilled to fit..Its got waaay more reed area than the stock stuff; Credit card tuners? Ya lost me there. I don't think I'm up to modding the case just yet. Maybe if I had the funds and resources to get my hands on another motor, I'd tear this one apart and do all kinds of funky mods and such. I'm trying to take baby steps lol. It's bad enough I was thinking of replacing the crank. That's more work than I can do right now. I'm still debating taking it in the house to work on, but then I can't run tests in the house. Too small and we all know how healthy 2t fumes in a small room are. Thanks though for the tip!

Credit card tuners are the folks who just buy this and that, slap it together and expect a rocket! The KX/RM 65 reed drops right in,only needs a few gaskets fabbed and some notching with a round file,no case cutting needed!!
There is likely some aftermarket reed assys out there thats this size made for a Mina, maybe somebody can add some comments?

What are you trying to say, eh bub? I know what you mean though. Curious, when you say notch out. You mean the reed cage itself and NOT the engine? I just don't want to go and try drilling any extra holes into the engine, that's what I thought you meant.

Not sure on a cheap one, but if you just want a drop-in assembly the best I know of is the V-Force3 from Stage6 or Moto Tassinari or Top Performance. Lots of area, but also the angles may work better for the minarelli. These are roughly $100 assemblies though.
Most of us are prob in the credit card tuner realm to John. He seems to be able to create damn near anything he can think up and he's always thinking.
What John suggested would be sweet if it had a simple angled adapter plate made so it was a simple bolt-on and aimed at the transfers. Maybe that's too much toward the realm of credit card tuning, but I'd buy one if the price was right.Performance companies could prob make an adapter like that cheap and easy, but then they couldn't sell us $100 reed blocks I guess.

I agree. It's different when you have the knowledge and tools all there. I envy him for that really. $100 is steep right now just for that. I was looking at some of them on ST and they have some nice set ups. Just not sure if I'm there yet, though at the rate I'm going I might as well lol. If it meant shaving/drolling the reed block itself, sure I'd risk it for a cheaper mod. But from what I see, I can just buy the Hoca for $34, keep the intake head aside, use mine and bam, fiberglass reeds in and I can buy spares if need be. I need to order valve stems for the tires and probably wheel bearings too so I may just do that from PFS soon. BTW 90GTVert I have your airbox mod on my table right now and I've come up with some nifty other parts and ideas. It's still a work in progress, but I slapped together the hose, two PVC adapters and a rubber coupling/adapter and man it looks pretty damn nice. Though I stuck a K&N filter I took off one of the junk 4t's on the end just to see how it would look and fit. I may try and use that filter after all. It's not very big and shouldn't be hard to restrict it if I need to. But as it looks right now I can clamp the whole thing to the carb and it would be completely sealed and ready to go. Now if I only had the carb and intake in tact to test it out. *sigh* WAIT!!! I can try it on the 4t! HAH! No no .. This mod is for a real engine.

So I went to Home Depot today to start on my idea of getting rid of the side mounted air box I had. The air box is actually in good shape, but the gasket seal in it is broken, the hose leading in I believe isn't sealing right and the thing is just in the way and a MOTHER#&@*%! to put on the carb. I'm never a fan of stiff plastic parts. Anyways so I spent more than I intended, but in all fairness I got a little extra PCV parts and a new feeler gauge too. Here's a list of what I got. Qty 2 - PVC Male Adapter 1-1/4 x 1" (the 1" part is threaded, you'll see why later) Qty 1 - Flex Coupling 1-1/2" x 1-1/4" Qty 1 - 1-1/4" ID Pool and Spa hose, 2 feet (it's more like 3 but the guy said "Well, looks like 2 feet to me!" I wasn't about to argue. Qty 1 - 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 Drain connector (the gray part you'll see as well) I also got 2ft of some PVC, elbows and what not but I don't believe I'll be using them. What I listed above is what you'll see in the pics. So this is the intake style and the space I'm looking at, for anyone not familiar with the VX50. There is quite a bit of room down here, I just am looking for the best way to make it all work I guess. Now you'll see the drain connector that I mentioned above. This fit PERFECTLY on the mouth of the carb, like it was made for it! Different angle. You can also see the 1-1/4 to 1" PVC adapter. The hose threaded onto that perfectly, no need for a clamp. I may put one on at the final build, but I like how it just threads on, makes it look cleaner and more like it was made for it. Keep in mind if this idea comes to fruition I will be painting all of this so there won't be gray, white and blue. Here you can see the K&N filter I took off of the 4t. It was a tight fit, but it sits nice in the 1-1/2 x 1-1/4" adapter. I took a stab at that honestly and I may test it out with a restriction mod. NO TAPE DAMMIT! Inside of the adapter you just saw, it squeezes onto the house rather well and secure. Here's just a couple of ideas I was toying with for mounting. Just to show you how flexible the hose is and how many options you have. I thought of using the 2ft PCV pipe and mating it with this tube to make a "snorkel" and have it hang off of the back of the bike even. Maybe I'll mock that up another time. So this was my brainstorm for the day. I'm not sure yet what's going to happen, I just wanted to get the parts and make sure they'd all fit before I start cutting, painting and mounting stuff. After all, I still don't have a complete intake on her yet. But thanks to niz76 I'll have a new (well, used but still in good shape!) reed block and valves here shortly. If the post office can get off their ass. Fire away folks.

Never worked when i used much more than two feet of hose on mine.

Never worked when i used much more than two feet of hose on mine. Oh I don't intend on using that much slack. If it's sealed right though it shouldn't matter I'd think, but still. I'm going to cut it, hell I even thought of trying the filter strapped right on the carb. Anything to get that box out of the configuration. I was thinking of gutting a bottle or can slightly bigger than the filter and using it as a restrictor of sorts though. I'm still brainstorming. But thanks for that input though, I'll keep it in mind when I start to monkey with a running engine.

I would try to minimize length if you use an airbox. If using the pod filter, I'd clamp it directly on the carb, but perhaps some sort of shield on one side to keep anything from spraying off of the tire at it.

I agree, Sitticuss already pointed out the length of it. I was only toying around with ideas. I thought of the filter directly on the carb and may just do that. I have to mod the filter though to control the air flow and I want to either mod or fashion a fender to at least guard the engine and carb from the rear wheel too. You have to admit though, it looked pretty damn cool lol. I have to measure the filter and look for a can or bottle to fit over it.

I got an answer from PFS and they said the Hoca intake would fit a carb 19mm and up. niz76 is sending me a spare reed valve cage with the metal reeds and a forward facing intake but I'm still thinking of just ordering the HOCA intake. Bigger reeds mean bigger intake, it's going to cost me the same no matter where I go to replace the reed assembly with brand new or getting new reed valves anyways. I know niz76 has the Hoca reed valve assembly and he's happy with it. Anyone else use it? With or without their intake. I don't have to use it, I have to figure out how I'm mounting the carb anyways.

Just to be perfectly clear- I didn't use the Hoca reed cage or intake. I simply used the fiberglass reed petals on my stock reed cage and intake...
