Okay, minor updates:
My Hybrid:
I've switched most of the yellow panels from the electric over to my BBK hybrid. I haven't buttoned it up yet because I'm planning some upgrades. I've been riding the Taotao in the meantime.
1) 11 coil stator, I'm going to need more power for ... 2) EFI conversion, yeah, I know, but bear with me. I have two options that I'm looking at DIY or a kit from Aliexpress. Both are in the works. I'll start a thread on this eventually.
125cc Hybrid
I finally got around to repairing the 125cc for the owner to live up to my part of the trade for the yellow electric scooter.
New intake, fuel & vacuum lines, and new carb. Dumped the gas for fresh and it starts and runs great. I'm amazed at how much more power the 125cc engine has compared to my 72cc upgraded scooters. It takes off and moves great, but it's still ugly in y eyes. I'll be glad to see it go.

I've done three as of this week. It's not about speed, it's all about the hill climbing torque. Bingo! However, everything equal, the 50mm kit begins to degrade in performance simply because the stock head, intake and carburetor simply cannot flow the air it wants to efficiently. Volumetric efficiency decreases if all you do is keep upping displacement without also upgrading the rest of the air flow path. A torque monster.....for only a few hundred rpm. Put a head capable of letting the 50mm kit breath, and a few other breathing improvements to accommodate the extra airflow and it will walk away from the 10cc smaller engine (naturally) Also in a headwind and launches are improved by displacement increases. My 50mm scoot has no problem maintaining 35+ even up relatively steep inclines. Every upgrade has come complete with matching head, rocker arms, and A9 camshaft. The local dealer tried to sell me the standard 47mm jug kit. I don't understand how they think that would work very well. I may end up with a 20mm carb on my Veken if I don't like the performance on hills. My short test drive felt like the improvement was good enough. Maybe a wide band O2 sensor could verify my mixture is alright. Ultimately EFI would be the best solution but the ROI is a bit whacked. They've recently started putting EFI on snow blower engines, perhaps that will drive the price down on some components, who knows.

I've done three as of this week. It's not about speed, it's all about the hill climbing torque.
1) My 2015 Taotao ATM50 has 770 miles on it. The PO put the 47mm kit in as soon as he got home and rode it for 500 miles until it stopped running. It turned out to be a simple valve adjustment, they were tight as a drum. I've had 270 trouble-free miles with it. I have buried the speedometer on this one going down hill, that's somewhere around 50mph. This is my daily driver.
2) My 2009 Veken hybrid has zero miles on it since the upgrade, I'm in the process of building it to suit my needs. This will become my daily driver.
3) I just put one on my daughter's 2014 Taotao. It's a HUGE torque improvement. I went up a hill during a test drive and didn't have to use WOT where I would have with the 49cc. She rides a lot more than I do, it's her only means of transportation.
All of these scoots use bone stock carbs and exhaust.

I have had problems with a couple bad tank mounted petcocks and cold starting issues, this mod helps with both problems, plus it eliminates the WOT fuel starvation problem with some vacuum petcocks. There's a Youtube video on the mod, but the music is annoying and it's a really simple mod, no need to watch a video. This mod is for tank mounted petcocks since you can simply bypass the external units. You will need tools to remove the tank, a power drill, a 0.111 inch drill bit (#34) or something close like 7/64ths or 2.5mm. (I have a HF drill set so I just picked a bit a little larger than the existing fuel supply outlet.) You'll also need a small bolt to plug the vacuum line on the manifold, unless you have another use for it. Lastly, you'll need a manual fuel shutoff, I bought a bunch of snow blower shutoffs on Amazon. 1) Remove your fuel tank and drain 2) Detach the petcock from the fuel tank and hoses 3) Carefully drill through the fuel supply pipe until you can see the drill bit in the center. The video says to simply drill through the membrane, but that doesn't always work well. I started with a smaller bit and worked my way up since my bits aren't that sharp and the center section is tough to drill with the larger bit.
Note the position of the fuel supply connectionThe drill bit is visible from the top4) Blow out the chips and debris, very important! 5) Install your fuel line back onto the petcock along with the manual shutoff. 6) Cut two short lengths of the old vacuum line and plug them with a bolt that fits tightly. 7) Install one of these short hoses onto the open port of your intake manifold. 8) Install the other onto the vacuum inlet of the petcock. The finished assembly should look like this: Reinstall the tank and enjoy a trouble free fuel supply!.

So, last week we broke the high temp record with 73F, morning temps in the 30s-40s. Today it's in the low 20s and the wife says "I'm gonna go out and warm up the car." as I putting my leather jacket on.
My little Taotao was NOT happy starting today, but it did. Now I gotta find a way to shield my hands from the wind. Gloves don't quite do it.

I'm a fan of FrankenMech's reverse trike, but I'd probably use regular saddlebags on the rear and paint it yellow. I have a thing about yellow scoots, I own two.

Hybrid #2 is gone, I made the trade for labor on a BBK install for my daughter and a future project, TBD.
Now I'm down to eight scooters.
4 - Veken hybrids, one with 47mm BBK 1 - Veken electric scooter, no clue what I'm going to do with this. 1 - 2016 Taotao ATM50 with 47mm BBK 1 - Linhai, waiting to be rassembled and sold. REALLY low miles on this one. 1 - Yamaha Chappy, waiting for an engine
Both BBK scoots will remain in my fleet.
I'm not sure about the Chappy, I may put a modern CVT engine in it or a 2T 50cc engine from a mini motorcycle. I have the mini motorcycle laying around in my shed. I really like the old-school look of the Chappy.

I think the tadpole trike version of the Ruckus clones is an interesting concept. It looks stable without the usual trike handling issues. If I had the funds, I'd have that as my only scoot.

Scooted in today, warm enough (32F) that I didn't have to wear my full helmet. It sure runs better at 32 than 18!

You can get a new 150cc Chinese scooter for under $1,000 or get a better quality used bike.
If you just want to avoid insurance and registration costs then you need to stay under 50cc. A GY6 is a GY6 for the most part.
I own three brands of GY6 based scooters. The Taotao and LinHai are nearly identical, only the wheels and speedometer are different.
My Veken is a totally different animal, 14" wheels with a hub motor to run on battery power.
Both designs perform similarly, same power and top speed. They both take the same performance upgrades with the same improvements. I know, I've done them on both.
I'm not the lightest guy in the world and the 49cc just didn't have quite enough power on hills. I only bought the first scooter to ride with my daughter when she bought one, now I'm hooked.

It sounds you're on the mend in more ways than one.
I've had a few periods of "never riding again" since the 1970s, I always get back on, eventually.
I always ride with protection. I live near the border with Connecticut. I see folks riding on big bikes with no helmet or jacket and there I am riding a little scooter with a helmet and armored jacket. (CT has no helmet law, MA does.)

CHONGQING ASTRONAUTIC BASHAN MOTORCYCLE MFG CO LTD. makes Roketa and a few other "brands". I don't know who makes Taotao but the scooter bodies look identical to Roketa. I own a Taotao and a Linhai, they have the same body panels as well. The specs on Roketa sound too good to be true 3.3 hp versus 1.8 hp from Taotao, unless Taotao is underestimating their specs.
I would be surprised if they were made in the same factory, or one next door to each other. If you place a large enough order, 100 I think, they will put your name on the same scooters!
