Just swapped one part at a time. Plug-nope Coil-nope CDI-nope
I did not swap the plug wire. I probably should. My next step is internal. Pull the head and inspect the O-ring. I don’t expect a head leak really or bad reeds because it seems to run fine once it’s running. Ryan did question the head gasket though when I was having shutoff issues.
It’ll have to wait until later. I HAVE TO line soccer fields so that 600 kids don’t hate me.

Well, I guess my next step is building a leak down tester. I’ll look through the site unless somebody posts a link.
I reassembled the engine and everything seems ok inside. Took carburetor apart and checked all its orifices, reassembled. Mixture screw was out three turns so while I had it torn apart I swapped the 42 idle jet for a 45. I know. Don’t change more than one thing at a time or you won’t know what changed what.
Put carb back on and I’m kicking but nothing. Not even a pop. If I put my hand across the carb and kick it almost sucks but not really. I tried spinning it with a drill and it cranks like crazy, enough to light the headlight and register 2500rpm. Still no start not even a pop. I think it’s not sucking in any or enough mixture. Seems to have compression and the rings looked ok.
Side note- 835mm belt arrived today. 18mm wide. I think if it was 20mm wide there is a possibility it would go to the putter rim of the Piaggio torque driver but I’m not sure. It’s too long though. I think the 815 belt is just gonna have to do. That belt is longer than the stock belt but shorter than the new one. When I took apart the cvt the variator had worked loose. Irritating. Something must have shifted post tightening.
Be gentle, September 6th is my anniversary of posting my first SOS here asking for help. It’s been a 20+ page wild ride into the knowledge belt.

OK it is back running again. I swap cases with another case that I have that only had 140 miles on the odometer. In the middle of moving parts over I realized I had ground out the case for the new Piaggio pulley so I had to backtrack and put a smaller pulley on because I just wanted to get it to run. So I did some mixing and matching and got a set to go in for the CVT. I turn the key crossed my fingers kicked it three times and it started. The other case was 6000 miles on it must have a leak in it. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it because I had spark I had gas.
Now the bad part, I was doing some test pulls in my front yard in the grass and dumped it. I want up hitting a cold frame greenhouse on my front porch. A nice 5 mph spill in the grass. But now my handlebars are loose? This isn’t a bicycle, how’s that happen? Same as a bicycle?

Oh dear. There is usually a bolt that goes through the handle bars, and steering stem. Perhaps you have snapped it.

Culprit has been found. It’s easier to see on the parts bike. Damn crappy setup. I guess that’s why you aren’t supposed to do 100mph on them.

I also know why I dumped it in the grass. It was gremlins! I swapped the covers on the CVT and carelessly left my protection behind. Sorry TanukiFixed it now.

That's not a very secure way to fix the steering. Most scooters I have worked on have a bolt passing through both parts.
See those gremlins won't touch the scoot if it's protected.

Well, my new to me (4000 miles) scooter has eaten it’s ring and scored the cylinder. It’s toasted. Now I’m looking to get a 70cc kit. The basic Naraku kit for 12mm seems cost effective. It appears is if this machine has never been apart. Mitsubishi drive belt, worn clutch, factory expansion type exhaust etc. Am I throwing money away buying a low end kit? Today marks one year. One year since I started my build folder with an SOS. Originally it was named something else and in another section but I had Brent move it and retitle it for me. In one year I’ve learned an awful lot and met some great people. I’ve had three different neighbors plus my Girlfriend give me rides after my scoot stopped scooting. I’ve learned not to reuse $10 engine parts and recently that Castor is gummy. I started to try hard on the Scoot Tag which is a good time. I’m very grateful for the knowledge contained in this space. I attempt to pass on what I’ve learned to others on-board when newer people pop in. I expect to be corrected when I’m wrong. Thank you to whoever reads this, now let’s ride.

It's been a sharp learning curve. But look at how much knowledge you have picked up along the way. The first real engine rebuild seems very complex. But once you get into it, it's not so bad. You will need another project soon. 😉

It gets better. I’ll detail a list of the carnage later tonight.

So the star washer broke. This was the beginning of the failure. I’m not sure when exactly it fractured. It then ripped the splines out of the center of it. This in turn caused my stack of spacer washers to slip and spin against each other behind the ramp plate. The heat of everything slipping caused the ramp plate to get really hot. Hot enough to melt Malossi brand rollers. The drive face was doing its own slip and slide on the other end of the drive boss because since the shim stack was loose it was getting no grip at all. Especially with the broken star washer. All this heat melted what was left of the drive belt and leaving me stranded. I got a ride for tools then a ride back for truck. All I wanted was a picture of a pet store……
