Ok , well couldn't get to the sandblatser place so just re grouped and moved ahead . got some screws coming from Wilton and the rubber washer/bumpers for the big handle . can't afford $186.00 for a new spindle ( big handle) so went ahead and painted it with primer and green just to keep the rust off for a while ; even tho the paint is gonna scratch. I'm now thinking about ordering the small t handles - their chrome new . the old ones look like hell . bought a chuck from McmasterCarr - mostly just because I wanted it . heh heh ., now I can use my 20 v 1/4" impact with other hex driven tools . and get some hex drill bits . my 12v cordless is about worn out .
www.mcmaster.com/28055A71/got back to work on it today since most of the bits and brushes etc . are here . couldn't find a relatively soft wire tube brush that fits into the barrel so I got a cheapy set of nylon brushes -figure after it's painted on the outside I can run the nylon up in there and spray it good with lube before I grease it . I had just enough 45% vinegar to give everything 1 more soak ; then dried the pieces and put in front of the fan , then wiped each one with brake cleaner and didn't touch any of it with my hands . I like the green ok. better than I thought I would . wish it was a little darker .

You could polish the small handles up then use some black oxide formula from a gun shop with some oil to preserve them.
Why mess with the inside of the barrel, just lube it and go.

FrankenMech had a great idea about black oxide for the small t handles . I found this vid - I liked this better than the other vid and I like how this guys' metal came out real black. I'll try this method tomorrow and I hope everything comes out real black . only , I'm gonna do all the pieces not just the t handles .

got some new used oil today - strung all the parts together for heating in the oven and then dipping in the oil. heated the oven to 285 cleaned everything with brake cleaner and then alcohol, heated them and ......... nothing . I dipped them after bout 20 mins. in the oven but it wasn't hot enough. tomorrow I'll clean the oil off and heat them at 400 and dip them again . see what happens .

It may take longer than 20 minutes to heat the parts in an oven. Ovens can be off a bit in temperature. Try an oven thermometer, even they can be off a bit though. At least you will find a temp that works.

yeah , ok. thanks . I saw another good vid where the guy showed the blackening would peel off if you get the steel too hot . just have to experiment a little I guess.

well, sheeeit. now I'm really bummed after watching this. but .......thou shalt not wish for shit beyond your reach . I do think I missed my calling. If I just would have stayed in that machining course in 1980 ; instead of switching to solar energy and then drywall. Outright beautiful work by this guy . My problem is , I seemed to have misplaced my milling machine and a couple of other tools
.
