well I heated everything in the oven at 410 degrees- for a fuckin hour - nada , no thing , zip . I think maybe the oil I got from the corner shop had synthetic mixed with regular oil and the process won't work with synthetic . that led me to watching more vids .
back to the drawing board .

I don't know if a black oxide process will work on zinc plated hardware.

sure did . also , now I think the big spindle and 2 small t handles weren't ever chromed . in images of new vises the handles are so shiny it looks like chrome- but now I think it is just super highly polished steel. don't know if I should continue trying to find some non synth used oil or buy (more money ) some kind of bluing/blackening product .

FrankenMech- I suspect the only pieces that might be zinc plated are the new large bolts, nuts, washers from home depot. correct ??

The purchased bolts would be zinc electroplate. Zinc can be removed in a bath of muriatic acid.
Drain the oil out of the lawnmower, should be nice and black dino oil.

no lawnmower; remember , she's been by herself 30 yrs + . stopped mowing I don't when , I think she still wanted to mow when I left Orl . in 09. when she was bout 85 . she puts pine needles in front . church friend mows back etc. for 20 bucks .
I don't feel like messing with muriatic .

Okay, it's done . I'll put it back together tomorrow. they're not shiny but they're sure black . stuck em in some 10w40 afterwards . the new chinese roll pins are hollow; the old ones weren't , so I soldered up the ends so trash won't get in the barrel .

I got a feeling the walls are gonna be too thick to fit comfortably .maybe U can grind them down if I need to .
