Nice job. Looks great now, and it should give years of service. I want to do a refurbishment on an old vice. I have not got one in my shed. But would much rather have a good quality old one. Than cheap new version.

Thanks . I'm really pleased that it came out ok and I didn't have any kind of screwed up problems .
I didn't see any restoration vids until I was basically done with doin stuff to it . didn't occur to me to search for that specific thing . I was looking at bluing vids . yes. when I beat too hard on my tiny harbor freight vise and cracked it I did a lot of research and read reviews and I swear the reviews painted a really pathetic picture of many vises - soft steel etc . . don't make em like they used to . I got really lucky with my neighbor selling me this one right after that .
the 2 freeze plugs came today- early. they're not gonna work . I'll have to call wilton tomorrow or Mon . and see if I can get oem dust cover . the walls of the plug are thicker than the space it has to go into .I ground 1 down inside and out and tried to tap it in but no go ; so then I cut 6 relief cuts around the edge and bent them to make it a little smaller and diff angle but no way . hope they have them and don't want like 30 bucks for one .
if I have to I'll just tape it . I got duck tape .

I been thinkin tho . it could be that the dust cover is supposed to go in the end of the bullet end - 1st .- before I install the barrel . before I take it all apart again I'll call wilton and ask . it's simple to get the barrel out but the little pins are too much trouble to do it without gaining anything .

A little fine hammer work to swage that down in there and smooth it out will make it OK. Maybe a little JB Weld, etc. Green paint will cover a multitude of sins.
It looks like the bolts used to fasten the vise down are too big or either the washers are too big to lay flat.

"A little fine hammer work"- hmmm, that gives me an idea . the holes in the vise base are 5/8" - so I bought 5/8" bolts . I haven't tightened down the nuts yet underneath. also I cut some silicone sheet rubber and put it under the washers - to protect my beautiful green paint .
maybe it'll look right when I tighten it all down- tomorrow - new pics

thanks Geoff, hmmm, wow , that's a pretty good idea . I was just on my way out to the garage to try to improve on yesterdays cap . I'm sure it would be a whole lot easier to use a lid and cut it down than to make another from scratch . that stainless is just a little thick; on the other hand it comes out sturdy .. I'll see what I can find for lids to cut down.it might even be worth buying a jar of chipped beef just for the lid .

ok, shit. rant against Google and Ama. - freakin searching sucks. I get everything but 1 11/16" od . spent 3 hrs . searching . - F it. BUT- I found the solution right here in the garage. Mom has a like 7' COPPER PLATE and I have hole saws and my neighbors bench grinder; Ill use the clear weld epoxy to glue it to the outside perimeter of the bullet end . should have it done tonite . really appreciate everybodies input

It's always the last little details that are the hardest.
