I used the electrolysis method on a rusted Ninja 250 tank, cooked it for a few weeks straight with many flushes, had to finish it up with brick cleaning acid to get it real clean..Since it was converted to a Yamaha RD250 2stroke engine using premix,a rusted tank is no longer a problem... It’s still rust free 😉

Anyone have any tips for seriously degreasing an engine case? Any tools yall use or chemicals?
I hit this grease with chemical degreaser, purple power, brake cleaner and a brush on my Milwaukee drill on high speed and nothing. Nada. This grease is like paint.

Oven cleaner is the sauce. I had used it before for cleaning brake dust at work and tried it on this engine case. Boy did it clean right up.
The grease was *really* on there. I put the cases in some very hot water and detergent and I think they somehow came out worse. I scrubbed with some scotch Brite and Super Clean and all that happened was this very sticky tar like substance got everywhere. It wouldn't come off my hands, even with some Fast Orange Extreme.
I hit it with that Easy-Off and BAM the grease was loose! A small plastic brush was all I needed to clean it off.

I decided to cheat on degreasing. I sell autoparts to a lot of local shops including a local transmission guy. I rang him up and asked if he'd put my cases into his hot tank and parts cleaner. He's been a longtime customer and was happy to help!
So tomorrow morning I'll have some perfectly clean cases. I never thought to tap my commercial parts customers for help before. Just to maintain a positive relationship it probably won't happen again. I'll post photos tomorrow!

I heard that too 190. Apparently easyoff is an issue with aluminum. I cut through the grease and let it sit in a tub of water overnight. I didn't have any issues as far as I know. I may end up spraying the cases with some cast aluminum paint to help even out the color.

I made a short video about my rust removal process. Check it out if you're interested. Gonna be trying this out on a rusty Vespa tank at the shop.

Don't,t try this ever, but if you take and old charger that drops AC to DC and a couple of clips and some bicarbonate of soda with water you have the basics of electrolysis, the exact formula? I,m clueless but I have the cleanest thermos flask in the county.

This is just some of the rust that came out of the tank. It took about 10 flushes with the hose before the water ran clear. The bottom of the tank is essentially rust free. There's some light rust around the tank but it will all be taken care of once the tank is etched and sealed. Electrolysis is no joke.

The engine build begins today. Installed the new OEM Honda bearings. Crank was doused in WD40 and is sitting in the freezer to shrink a little. I don't want to heat the bearings to install the crank but I may do it anyways. I don't want to use my crank puller unless I have to.
