Another build? Oh sure. ;D
I got a call from a friend of my father a few nights ago. He said he wanted to give me his 2008 Venus 50. This is the same scooter I worked on some time ago, in THIS thread. He lives in a townhouse and his neighbors have complained because he has 3 vehicles, even though the scooter fits in a spot with his Miata. He's had a couple of semi-wrecks. The latest was the last time he rode it, many months ago. He was going about 35-40MPH and hit a small median. He was fine, but it bent the wheel and broke the lock inside his trunk. The scooter has sat outside since then, and never started.
I showed up to pick the scooter up today and he told me if I could use it for parts, or fix it, or sell it, it was fine with him. He then said, if I sell it he wouldn't turn down $100. I gave him $100. I'd rather know it's mine to do as I please than worry about someone expecting something if I sell it a year from now. He seemed O.K. with that, and I was happy to load it up and bring home scooter number four.
$100 isn't too bad for a 1E40QMB with only 235 miles. ;D
Here's the bent wheel from his latest wreck.
Here is the lock that busted off from the crash. Luckily I don't really want the trunk anyway.
It's got some discoloration, but maybe it'll come out with a good cleaning?
Some rusty bits, but nothing terrible. The frame and important parts are in good condition.
Now, the scooter hasn't ran in a long time. I thought about just draining the old gas, cleaning the carburetor, and whatever else to get it going again. Then I realized I already have a performance benchmark on this thing. From the thread I mentioned earlier :
"He wanted me to ride the scooter for a while to be sure it was alright, so I took it for a 10 mile ride. Wow. It really has been a while since I've rode a stock 49cc 2 stroke. It pretty much requires a push start, then it goes from about 10-25 suprisingly quickly, then makes it's way to 30 in reasonable time, then slowly churns up to around 35MPH. I managed to get as fast as 37MPH down a small hill, but it would drop into the upper 20s on any decent incline.
I was also unimpressed with the little 10" tires (I don't think they're even 3"x10"). I actually stopped after the first mile to see if the scooter had square tread (like car tires or something). I did start getting used to it, but if you flinch the scooter wobbles yet it didn't feel like it would wanna be leaned very hard. I'm not even sure it would be a good idea to make this thing faster from the way it feels. At 35MPH it seems like a wreck could happen at any moment. I rode a friends Baja SC50 with 3x10s and it didn't feel nearly this unstable."
I do think the handling would feel different to me now, since riding the little SunL so much.
The first thing I did was pull the flywheel and ship that off to 190mech so he can lighten it.
I pulled the battery out and charged it. Let's hope the rest of this thing isn't a "Super MF."
The oil pump, oil reservoir, emissions junk, and stock muffler were all removed.
I pulled the engine out and got it up on the workbench. I disassembled the top end, praying to see a 12mm wrist pin. Jackpot! The Airsal I have will fit this engine! It's a good thing too, because Mr. Butterfingers dropped the stock piston on the floor. It didn't fare too well.
These cases match up so much nicer than the cases from T1 that I recently matched.
They aren't far off of the Airsal's ports.
I installed the Airsal and did a little investigating with the degree wheel. I was curious to see how much different the port durations would be from the stroker.
With just the base gasket :
Exhaust Duration : 174
Transfer Duration : 122
With the base gasket and a 0.3mm spacer :
Exhaust Duration : 176
Transfer Duration : 126
For comparison, the 45mm stroke showed these numbers :
Exhaust Duration : 190
Transfer Duration : 146
I had to get a look around the transmission too.
Hmmm. This sounds so familiar.
Removed that pesky restrictor so maybe I can make some marks farther out on the variator.
The rollers were about 5g stock and the variator was in good shape, so I left them alone.
I did swap in a 1500RPM contra spring and 2000RPM clutch springs though.
Got a little progress on day 1. ;D
