Pulled the trigger today on a Taotao CY50B from Family Gokart so I figured I'd start my build thread because I can not leave anything stock. Started shopping and nabbed a good spark plug and mag drain plug set. Going to wait until it gets here to see what else I will need since I have a decent collection of parts from building cars. I do know I'll be doing some appearance mods as soon as it gets here.
So stay tuned to this thread as I take a journey through the adventure that is owning a Chinese scooter.

Got a call from Family Gokart today to hash out the delivery. Customer service so far has been good. Getting the crate off the big rig with out a fork should be fun.

Shoulda got the lift gate service for I think an extra $10 from them. That's what I did and it was pallet jacked right into my garage. Worth every penny IMO. It's about 250lb crated, so if you have a friend around you can do it. I've done it once, but it's worth the lift gate money usually. If you have a truck or can borrow one even if you can't get someone else to be there when the scoot arrives, I had a driver help me get a crate from the rig to a truck bed then just waited till someone could help me lift it off the truck bed. Some drivers are very cool and willing to help however is reasonable, some not so much. At any rate, good luck with it.

I bought my scooter from the same folks - they get good ratings from me It feels like a small operation, but they are very helpful if needed, and very prompt. I emailed them my vin # to get my Manufacturer's MSO and bill of sale, 3 days later it arrived in my mailbox. No notary fees or other nonsensical fees - they just got it done. Yeah - a friend to help get 'er off the truck, or a smaller pickup truck to slide it into would make it easy.

I went ahead and got the MSO.. no tags requireed where I live BUT if I move or go to sell it, I figured it could make things a lot easier at that point.

Helmet and parts came in today with the scoot coming tomorrow. Then a few days to get paperwork and god only knows how long for the state of MD to give me tags.

Once you have the paperwork you should be able to walk into the MVA and walk out with a registration sticker and they'll mail the title. That's how it's supposed to work anyway. My MVA told me last year they didn't do scooter registrations. I ended up having to pay the local Honda shop to do the paperwork for me. Then I contacted the MVA and she said yes they are supposed to do it at that office and ended up having to brief the manager who then had to inform all the employees there. I don't think you'll have this issue being in a less rural area, but if you do don't run off and pay a lot more at a shop unless you just don't wanna wait.

I'm not sure if I'll try Annapolis first or just go straight to HQ in Glen Burnie. There is also a little service thing up the road and if its not too spendy I may just have them do all the work.

This is what you would need to take with you, straight from an MVA email when I was inquiring. Could try calling first. I really think I was just the first one to try and register a new one here. Not a lot of scoots around me. " You will need to visit a full service MVA branch to transfer ownership of the scooter or mail the documents (certified) to a full service MVA. The assigned Certificate of Origin, Bill of Sale, completed VR-005 Application for Maryland Certificate of Title and VR-337 Application for Title Decal for Mopeds, Motor Scooters, ATVs, Off-Road Motorcycles and Snowmobiles and appropriate fees will be required. The VR-005 and VR-337 are available for printing on our website www.MVA.Maryland.gov. Click on FORMS/Vehicle Registration Forms. " Get all of that printed and filled out in advance and then you've just gotta worry about the always "fun" MVA experience and long lines. I ended up paying $155 at the Honda shop vs $65 at the MVA.

In Michigan it costs $25 to register a scooter. $10 for the registration and $15 for the license sticker which is good for 3 years ($5 a year).

Scooter arrived today and I got it running. The quality is better in ways that I expected and worse in others. Tomorrow I'll go over it and do the dielectric and lock tight.
Its not the colour I was expecting. I wanted the black and white but this is 90% black with tan floorboard piece. I might paint that black. The rubber mat is an awful brown colour and so are the grips. I assume the grips are pretty standard and easily replaced. Stock mirrors seem like crap but wont know till I use them in traffic.
Overall I'm pretty satisfied.

The bars should be 7/8". I've used bicycle grips a lot on my different scoots. The throttle side can be a bit tight, but they work fine and can be had very cheap in lots of styles.
If you are looking at your shoulders in the mirrors bending them may help. I put mine in a vice and used a bar to give me leverage so I could bend them pretty easily.
